I am currently 32 years old and I am waiting for a surgery date.  I am excited but nervous as well.  I know that having this surgery isn't about what I am going to look like but how healthy I am going to be but I am concerned about a little about excess skin.  I currently weigh approx. 230 lbs.  My other question is at any point does OHIP cover plastic surgery to remove excess skin?  If I could get some input I would appreciate it.

Hello and welcome,

I had lost over a 100 lbs before (on a meal plan) and I never had much extra skin. My weight when I started was 299 and i got down to 147, but I had worked out everyday. I gained it all back and now have opted for surgery. My doctor told me that genetics, exercise, and age all play factors in how much extra skin someone has. Let's hope for the best that it wont be that much. As for the insurance question, I have  no idea if it will cover it or not. I know my ins company does not.

Good luck to you,
susan

I am also waiting for my surgery date.  Your insurance company may pay for the excess skin, but it is unlikely.  For an insurance company to pay it has to be documented that you have massive infections, or the excessive skin causes problems or gets in the way of a normal situation of some sort.  I work in the medical field with insurances and it is very difficult to be reimbursed for excessive skin removal!

I just had surgery 5 days ago. Healing has been easy and great... My only advice would be follow the Drs. Directions to the "T". Be open about everything even excess skin. I know I will have some around the stomach area.  But I was prepared for that and so is my husband. Be open with your spouse.
Also excercise will be a big factor. Make sure your up and walking right away.  If your insurance pays for the surgery 100% they will help you with the plastic surgery if that will be your rout.
Good Luck...
