I know if there is a will, there is a way........

I'm currently a stay-at-home mom of 2 small children. My husband works, but does not have insurance with his job. I need WLS!! I am 31 years old and I don't want to spend much more of my life big and miserable.

I have applied with all of the jobs that offer insurance for part-timers. There just aren't many jobs where I live right now and unemployment is high here.

I have also applied for surgery loans with a few places, but my credit isn't perfect, so I only qualify for a portion of the loan.

I have already posted on the insurance and financing form. I just wanted to see what you would do in my shoes.
I know I have to do what is right for me, but if you have already had surgery, you are at a different view point than I am.
I just want some of your input or feedback, thank you!

Do some checking with your state. They have to have some sort of state run insurance plans at low costs.

I was in a very similar situation. I was lucky enough to have many open credit cards and lines of credit that I used to pay for surgery. I also used my tax refund and student loan money. I'm completely tapped out now and have to pay more each month in minimum payments than I make, but I know I needed surgery for my health and it was worth it to me. I wish you luck and hope you can work something out.

I would see how much it would cost for you to get insurance.. that is another option... most states do offer a lower cost for families... children definitely.. sometimes getting adult coverage is a little harder..... but paying for one year of insurance has to be less then paying for the surgery...... yes you will have followups .. but by then your husband or you may have insurance through your job... It is worth a shot...... best of luck to you...

  • Check with state to see if you can get insurance
  • Check how much your own policy would be
  • Do you have a credit union, if you have a car loan already see what they can do for you for a personal loan. Or see when you are done paying for you car then get another loan.
  • Do you have any credit cards? You can put balance on them.
  • Check out www.lendingclub.com. It a shared lending place. Fico must be 670. You write why you need the loan and different people fund your loan. Explain the situation in great detail.
  • How bad do you want WLS? Go back to school full time and get grants the money that you have left over use for WLS.
  • You could open credit cards but this will ruin your credit if you open too many.
  • Refinance home.
  • Sell things that you don’t want. Ebay one man’s trash is another man’s treasure mentality.
  • Don’t have surgery in USA if you end up being self pay it will be double the cost.
  • If all this fails beg, borrow or steal (maybe not steal but you know what I mean)
I think I did all of them except go back to school and refinance home because I don’t own one. Good luck to you.

Hi.  I had Lap-Band surgery 5 years ago.  I just saw on Discovery Health Channel yesterday on that show "Big Medicine" how that hospital had a charity thing where a lady had gastric bypass for a very reduced rate.  She had to pay about 4K when the suregery is actually 23K or so.  I would look into the hospitals and see if you can apply for a charity for surgery.  Perhaps you can talk to the doctor who does the suregery and see if they offer it.  Good luck.  Hope this helps.  :-)

My situation was identical to yours.  One year ago when I went in for surgery, my husband did not have insurance with his job and I was a SAHM with my 2 kids as well.  They had insurance through the state.  I applied for myself and they covered my entire procedure.  Some people gave me grief for getting medical assistance for what they considered a nonessential surgery, but at almost 300 lbs at only 31 years old, I knew I did what I had to do for not only me but my kids.  Go onto your state's website and look into insurance for yourself on there.  If you have a choice of insurances, talk to the surgeon's office to see which on will cover the surgery.  I actually had to switch my state insurance because the one I originally had would cover the consulatation, but not the surgery.

Good luck with your journey!
