I'm just curious...I'm having a RNY next month and I was told to go off my "hormones" 2 weeks before surgery.

The reason for stopping the pills before surgery is to lower the chances of getting blood clots after surgery.   I was told after surgery that it was fine to go back on them when I got home.  They still have not regulated yet in my body since it went through a huge transition.

Good Luck on your surgery.

Thank you so much for your response, that makes perfect sense. Congratulations on your surgery, I hope that you have a great recovery.

I was told the same thing by my PCP. I asked the surgeon yesterday when I went in for my 2 week pre-op appt. and she looked at me like I had 2 heads. She said that there would be medicine to counteract the blood clots anyways and she was more worried about me getting pregnant.

I think that I will do it for 1 more week and then not the next. I am just not sure though...

I am a nurse in an OB/GYN office.  I was about to go on bc before my surg because of cysts.  My doc told me to wait until after the surg because you are at more risk for blood clots when you are on bcp's.  I would ask the surgeon since everyone is different but chances are you won't want to be fooling around for a while so you'll have time for the bcp to get back in your system.  LOL

My doc told me to continue my BC pills before and after - they gave me 3 shots over 2 days to prevent the blood clotting, but that the BC is already a little compromised (use back-up for the first month post-op) so I needed to continue to take them as I had previously.

I started BCP's after about 8 months post op. I had terrible bleeding problems with heavy periods lifelong. Ok I did notice a significant stall ..hmmm wether it was coincidental or BCP related I dunno But I bumped and changed exercise and dropped 10 lbs after I got my crap together and realized what was going on.Im a year out now and doing more exercise .It seems to be helping.
