Sugery and children

Has anyone had the surgery before they had children?  I have my date scheduled for 12/2 for the bypass and now I am having a million questions run through my head....

I chose the bypass because I was not keen on having the band inside me.  I had hip surgery in the past and went a year with pins in my hip, so having foreign objects inside me is not a new thing.

Now I am wondering if the lap band would be smarter being young.  I will be 30 next month and I know I want to have children someday.

A little history - I have been approved mainly because of my hip dysplasia (the weight needs to come off before we can think about another surgery) and sleep apnea.  I do not have a BMI of 40 however in am in the 38 range I think.  My weight mainly came on because of medicine about 10 years ago....and ever since "a pound here, a pound there" has added up through the years.

I know I don't eat healthy and I need to cook more often but when I eat, I tend to eat small meals and portions anyway.  My main issue I believe is my metabolism is shot.

I am just starting to wonder if the bypass is too drastic.

Any suggestions and information would be greatly appreciated!!

Hi!  I know fellow WLS people who have had children AFTER WLS and their pregnancy and babies are healthy.  If you want personal stories from people who have had WLS and then babies visit the WLS and Pregnancy forum (go under other forums and scroll thru).

Best to you making your final decision

You can definitely have healthy children after WLS. In fact your pregnancy should be easier on you.

Good luck!

I haven't had children yet either and at first the idea that I could have my band loosened for pregnancy was kinda interesting. But then I found out there is nothing about RNY that should prevents women from having a healthy pregnancy (obviously with any WLS you'd need to be really good about vitamins anyway, but particularly with pregnancy).

My metabolic issues pushed me to get RNY (though I did consider VSG as well--I liked this option better than the band because it is a physiological change.)

Metabolism slows as we age. So even if you have a lap band now, you will get older and as far as I know, the band won't have any effect on your metabolism.

Have you looked into the VSG? It  seems like a good option for many.
