My nerves are absolutely kicking in to overdrive!  I'm one week away from surgery and everything has fallen in to place perfectly thus far.  What can ya'll tell me about the sensations that I might feel physically after surgery?  How bad is the pain?  How difficult is it to move around physically?  Are there limitations to your mobility?  My mind is racing 100 mph and I can't concentrate on anything!  Any info ya'll can pass along about the surgery and time spend in the hospital right after would be great!  I just want to say, too, and I appreciate everyone here and this web site so much.  It has helped me more than I can say and I'm looking forward to having it while I'm home healing!  Thanks for listenin', ya'll! *hugs* Stacey

My brain's gone bye-bye here... I can't remember if you're having it done Lap or Open?  I had it done Lap and when I woke up I was sore as the dickens through my entire abdominal area, but it wasn't unbearable at all. At first they had me on a morphine PCA pump that really didn't help me much. What really helped my pain control was when I was able to start swallowing liquids they put me on Lortab Elixer... that stuff was like gold to me. It took away nearly all my soreness and didn't make me feel loopy at all. It allowed me to get up and move around a lot and that is very important after surgery.  What you'll experience depends a lot on your surgeons technique as well as the standard procedures your hospital follows.  For instance my surgeon used surgical glue to close my wounds and that was great because there were no staples or stitches to worry about and the glue held very nicely. Also my Dr had standing orders for anti-nausea meds called Zofran. I had orders for them to use them as needed and the only time I asked for it was right before my swallow test. The first thing that was going into my new pouch was icky thick stuff to help the xrays to show up good. I didn't want to take any chances. I never had any problems with nausea at all post-op but don't be affraid to ask for something if you feel even a little bit like you're going to be sick. One of the hardest things for me was not being able to sleep on either side for over a week. I am a side sleeper and I had to sleep on my back elevated to be comfortable enough to sleep good. The first few nights I was home I slept in the recliner actually.  I also had a catheter in when I woke up.  Ihad to have that in until the following morning, that was probably the most unpleasant experience through the whole thing for me. I was glad to have it gone.  Stace... hon... you are going to do fine. Everyone has different experiences, but I'm sure things are going to roll right along as planned without complications. We'll be here for you too, just post up anytime you want to talk, or send me a message if it's too quiet around here. I'm glad to ramble on any time with you. :) Take care and keep posting about those fears. Fears are like the monster under the bed, talking about them is like turning on the light and seeing there's nothing to be affraid of.  {{{Hugs}}}

Stacey,

I woke up from surgery expecting the worst pain ever (from all the post I read pre-op), and while I was in pain, its wasn't at all what I expected.  I was out of bed about 5 or 6 hours after surgery to walk the halls, and that first time was horrible to get out of bed, but then each time it gets easier.  by day 3, I was completely able to get out of bed myself - no help from nurses or DH or use of the pullbar they had. I was on the morphine drip and remember pushing it a few times, but around 2am the nurse came in to take my temp and blood pressure and that was the last time I used it.  My doctor was so amazed that I wasn't using it on the second day, but by then I wasn't in pain at all.  And its been that way since I've been home. The pain is really going to depend on how the surgeon works and how well you heal/deal with it. Good luck! Jenny
