Kicking the Habit
Jen- My addiction to Diet Coke was hard core!!!!!! I was a big gulp a day addict. It has now been 7 days since my last Diet Coke. Before surgery was so hard!!!!!! but not hard after surgery because I took a sip or two one and felt like I would EXPLODE.So, my relationship with Diet Coke is over. We broke up but I ain't bitter or anything.

Hey Jen, I see you're from N. Las Vegas...I have a niece & a nephew that live there.
Anyway, pre-op the idea of giving up soda was hard. How did I kick the habit?
Well, I kept drinking 'em until about a few days b4 surgery and that was that. After surgery, I followed my doctor's guidelines and really soda was the last thing on my mind. The first week (hell week) is trying enough...believe me the last thing on your mind will be soda.
My surgeon told me (sometimes I'll say "us" because my hubby had the surgery too) we could not have soda because of the carbonation, sugar content etc. You don't need soda. You'll soon forget all about it.
I'm a year and 2 months out and I have had sips, maybe a can or three a month but it's not the same. I'm not crazy about it...makes me hungrier I think.

I guess I will be the seeker of bad news here ..... The habit comes back.... along with others.... I am 2.6 years out ... I can drink pop.... I can drink beer..... I can eat a whole sandwich.....
My rule I still dont consume ANY sweets.... I dont know if I dump on sweets but why pu****
I didnt have this surgery to loose out on life... I had it to maintain a healthy life style and be active....
If I drink diet pop ot two a day.... is that as bad as eating 3 Big mac 2 orders of fries and a diet coke 3 years ago... I dont think my demise is coming soon...
Water is the key ..for sure ...
I look at what I lost to what I gained... and most of all I dont beat myself up for being bad once and a while....Cause no matter what we think most of us where overweight because we were stress eaters.... So I take the stress out of my life ....
I will say though for the first 9 months NO POP for me....
Remember 18 -24 months is the prime window for loss..after that it slows down .. So use the first 2 years to your advantage... and after that look at what you learned in the first two years as a way of life...
Just my 2 cents
Have a great day .....

After 7 or 8 weeks off soda, I think I actually now like Crystal Light. Could I be delusional or high off of whatever is in that strange yellow powder.
When it reaches 110 degrees here in Phoenix----- which will happen VERY soon, I may crave a regular fully leaded original Coca-Cola with lots of ice.
Maybe I will just make a Coca Cola popsicle---. I'm thinking putting coke in an ice trey will kill the carbonation.
VERY SAD that I'm having a Coca-Cola fantasy. Very sad!!! -Jenn C. in AZ
I was hard core for years and honestly think my blood is 65% Diet Coke and 35% frosting. Nah, I wasn't unhealthy at all.
I had slowed down before surgery because I started having caffeine issues. Never had before. I drank a Big Gulp in the AM, coffee until 12, a BG for lunch, some coffee until 5 and a six pack or more of soda at home. Wasn't until about 2 yrs ago that I finally felt my heart come out of my chest. I didn't stop, but I did slow down. Dingbat.
I started picking it up again before surgery and just went cold turkey a few weeks before. I take 2 sips once or twice a month when my husband gets one. I could probably go back to it, but have just decided I didn't get my guts rearranged to go back to bad habits.
Soda sucks for our bodies. Cigs are right there too, but HEY...I'd pick up both with a can of frosting in a heartbeat. My head and I have conversations weekly. Sick, sick pup.
Lifelong deal this is...but we are really worth the effort.
