In Thickness and in Health...

Now that I have reached a first weight loss benchmark-- you know when you lose enough pounds that people really notice. The reaction of my some of my peeps (fam, friends & co-workers) is so wierd.

First of all, a couple of co-workers look at me wierd when I eat anything as if I'm "cheating". Do the co-workers think that we eat nothing at all after WLS or do they think that I will explode after eating yoplait at lunch?

One thin friend of mine now only eats the amount that I eat when I'm around. She is thin and didn't have WLS, so why the heck is she trying to match my serving with only eating 1/2 cup of food at Applebees?

Then a couple of my chubby loved ones seem annoyed that I eat with a spoon now instead of a forklift like I did prior to WLS.  Hey, OH Buds---Tell me stories about wacky reactions that you have noticed following your surgery.... -Jenn C in Chandler

My Mom and my husband have been perfect - as I expected they would be - down to earth, want the best for me, caring and just really cool. Here's some weird ones: 1. Stick thin acquaintance - "You look great. Are you done losing? No?! Wow. 75 more lbs? You'll be too thin." The 75 would put me AT LEAST 40 lbs. more than her. Um? WHAT? 2. Fat friend - " Yeah. I don't weigh enough to qualify for surgery." Um, yeah ya do. I get the weird looks too, when eating with others - in all honesty I'm pretty sure they are waiting for me to hurl. That's all most people know. Poor babies. :)

Peggy- You are SO funny. Your response made me laugh so hard. People are so wacky. The meanest response has been from my cats. They think my lap is not as cushy and soft as it used to be. Plus, Tess-- my plus size cat, now has a complex about her weight. She just asked me if her butt looks big in her new purple collar. -Jenn

I *WISH* my kitties would get the hint that I'm not so cushy! ARGH! They still try to cat pile me! It's funny - I used to fit two cats per thigh...now...not so much. LOL Does Tess need a meeting? :)

The weirdest looks I get now are from my dog.  Before the surgery he would just follow me around waiting for the inevitable piece of whatever junk I was eating fall to the floor so that he could snatch it right up.  My dog was a better vacuum than a Dyson. But now,  I just get these sad looks from him, like the look Oliver Twist gave when he asked for more Gruel.  And with the amount I'm allowed to eat now, there's no way I'm sharing with the dog. My mother just can't figure out that I can't eat like I used to.  We go over to her house last weekend and its the same routine I've always gotten at her house.  "Would you like a sandwich", "Look at these new potato chips that came out", "You'll love this ice cream", and 5 minutes after I told her I can't eat BBQ at this time "Let's order in some BBQ!"  Drove with her for an hour the other day and she must have pointed out here favorite restaurant at least a dozen times (all different ones by the way.)  One of these days I'll tell her she might contributed a little bit to my obesity. Most of my co-workers are OK with it.  I guess the big problem they have with it is now they have to find somebody else to drive to lunch since I'm now eating my lunches at work. I also get weird looks from my wife.  There's a twinkle to her eye now.  I think she wants something...

Your Mom offers you food and asks you to eat in order to comfort and nurture you. She needs to find a new way to nuture--- You and your wife should drive over to her house tomorrow and drop off all of your dirty laundry. She can nurture will washing and folding and ironing...  Just kidding about the laundry... Jenn C. in AZ

LOL .  You all crack me up.  I often wonder what the comments will be after surgery. Now I know.  I am already getting them before surgery. Upon mention of actually considering the surgery: "OMG, no way .... It CAN'T be that bad (while eying me up and down dubiously).  Why don't you walk every day instead?" "You can do it without surgery, I'm getting a treadmill you can come over every day and walk."  Obviously this is going to be one part of the whole process I am going to have to learn to adjust to.  I'm sure these are some of the reasons they even have counseling, etc. attached to this surgery procedure right?  Thanks for your feedback!

Hey all. I'm new to this board. Been hanging out mostly on the Men's board. Glad to see everybody here. Special set of challenges for us in our 30's to be sure. Getting used to being a thinnner person and all.  People tentatively ask me how much I've lost and when I tell them they're generally floored. I did have one woman the other day assume that I was sucessful without the surgery and she applauded me for not taking the "easy way out". It was in a professional situation at work and I decided not to get into it with her since I wouldn't be seeing her everyday, but I do wonder why the surgery is seen as some kind of easy solution.

Imagine that they think you NEVER considered hopping on a treadmill AND they think that's all it takes. *sigh* Blissful ignorance.
