Hey guys, Im new to this board, and I am waiting on a surgery date. But I have the strangest fear, and its the only fear I have. My hair currently is thick and said to be georgous, although I think that is stretching it, but I do love my hair. B/C Im fat, I feel its my best feature, and Im so afraid its going to fall out after surgery. So anyone who has any comment on this feature, please let me know. I must say I love this 30's board, nice to talk to folks in our age. Horselady

Hello and welcome! Hair loss can happen after surgery. In collecting facts, observing posts and reading here and 100+ other places...it happens regardless of what you do or don't do, but error the side of do DO take your vitamins, DO drink your water, DO watch your protein! As always, follow the advice of your care team!!! I too started with a great deal of thick hair cut fairly short. From 3 mos. to about now I have had daily loss a little more than normal. You can't tell by looking at my head and it is beginning to slow down now. If the WORSE thing that happens to me is some thinning...I'm cool. I'm healthier than I have been in ages and going forward to goal! Welcome again!!!

I'm about 4 months post op and I won't lie to you, it IS thinning. Every morning in the shower where I used to lose it unnoticably, now when I shampoo or condition I have enough hair in my hands that I see it. To look at my own head in the mirror... I can't see it thinning, however I am finding that it's so healthy now it doesn't want to hold any body. I'm sure that's a combination of thinning hair and vitamins/healthier eating habbits. I do have to agree, if the worst side effect of this whole process is my hair being a bit thinner, I'm ok with that. I've lost 85lbs so far, another 30-40 to go and I feel a whole lot better. Good luck on your journey. Renee

Hello Rhonda, I had my surgery in March '06. When I started to NOT take my vitamins, calcium, and protein...I noticed that my hair was falling, dramatically. I was very afraid because I to have long, thick hair. So I restarted my vitamins, calcium, and protein..my hair stopped falling off immediately and began to regrow........Follow your care plan and you should have good results....but remember everyone is different,.... Good Luck

hi horselady, I am having my surgery on 2-23-07 and this is also one of my greatest fears. I started taking Biotin about 1 month ago to try to help, and I am also trying not to do any damage to my hair before surgery such as blow drying or highlights. I too, have a very long, thick mane and am worried. I am told my many post-op's that the hair loss is only temporary just like evrything else. My stylist also said if it starts to become thin, sometimes if you go a little lighter and shorter, it is less noticeable. Hope this helps! jodi
