We'll I've been considering WLS for about 2 years off and on. I have a baby boy who's about a year and a half, and I want to be around for him. I don't know, but I think I'm approved for surgery. I found out the Naval Hospital here in San Diego offers the Lap RNY, I called my insurance company TRIWEST to see what I needed to do, they said I am a benificiary and if it's done at a Military treatment facility they don't even get involved. If i went to a civilian I would need approval from them. I have my first appointment on March 1st. I don't even know how to focus right now, I have so many questions running through my head, some serious and some I know are going to sound weird. I've been married for 5 years and my husband wants a divorce, Im afraid this might affect my psyc eval.....I hope not. I've had some friends ask me, "Are you doing this for him?" My answer is always the same, "HELL NO." When we met I was big, it's not like i've gained alot a weight durring our marriage, I think at most, of gone up about 2 dress sizes. I just really decided to buckle down on this surgery, for a number of reasons. First my son, with my husband leaving i need to make sure i'm around for him. Second I've noticed I'm tierd more and boy am i always hurting, my back kills me, and now i have some kind of pinched nerve affecting my right leg, I've been on pain killers for about 6 months my pcp doesn't tell me it's weight related, he says it could be, but I know carrying in extra 100+ pounds has to affect it, right?. So in other words, I know my weight is affecting my health. I also notice I ask my husband for alot of help...."Can you get me this or do that?" Mainly because I'm too tierd to do it myself, which is bad considering I'm only 22, but I need to be in good shape and health to take care of myself and my son, I can't be relying on my husband for everything. What do you think??? Will a divorce affect my chance on WLS.....oh another big factor is insurance. When ever we do get a divorce I'll no longer have TRIWEST our insurance. We're not planning on getting divorce untill the end of the year, I'm hoping things will get better, I think he might just be in a funk. He's really supportive of the surgery and says he'll be here for me all the way. Well I just wanted to vent a bit. Take Care Everyone.

Welcome, and we have a lot in common. I have a daughter who will be 1 1/2 this month. My husband is also in the navy. I would say if you're going to do it, then go for it asap. After you lose the military insurance it gets a lot harder, and more expensive. I just had my surgery on Jan. 20th, and I will pay nothing. I had it with a civilian because they don't do it at our navy hospital here in Great Lakes. I would say make sure whatever navy dr. who does it on base, does it all the time. Otherwise go to a civilian if you can. People also asked me if I'm doing it for my husband, and I gave the same answer. He's put on as much weight as I have since we got married. Feel free to email me. Also, I hope if it's the right thing for the 2 of you to work out then that's what happens. Do you know that you can go to marriage counseling off base for free?
Welcome! I am going to try to answer your questions, but I am a bit unknowlegable when it comes to the military, etc... but I do know that insurance is HARD to come by and it is also nice that you have one that is so willing to preform WLS on you... I had one hell of a time with insurance. So the sooner the better in my opinion.
Also, the pysch evaluation was so easy for me. I doubt a pending divorce would affect it much. Sure, they may bring it up, but so long as you are stable mentally, you should be fine.
Best of luck to you and your son and I hope everything works out for the best with you and your husband.
Take Care,
Mary
