Hi Guys,
I just wanted to ask if there were any of you who have been in or know of anyone who is/was in the Peace Corps. I have always wanted to be in the Peace Corps, but because of my weight, I know I wouldn't have qualified. I am now almost 4 months post-op (Duodenal Switch), and 45 pounds lighter. I would be joining the PC in about a year (if I get accepted, that is).
I am somewhat concerned about their health requirements - Is there a chance I might not be accepted because I have had WLS? Also, do you think it will be impossible to meet my daily protein requirement since I may very well be in or around remote areas?
I would love to hear from any of you who may have been in the Peace Corps. I do not post here often because of time restraints, but I love reading about all of your experiences with WLS. I am 21 and just wanted to know if any of you guys were also thinking about joining the Peace Corps?
Any input is appreciated. Thanks,
Fernanda
I'm not sure about the requirements for joining, but I would imagine that if you feel you can take care of yourself you should be able to convince them you are ready!
Were I you, I would first evaluate everything I need and ask someone involved with recruiting if you would be a good candidate- maybe they can put you somewhere they know you'll get protein and vitamins.
Try to work to system, and never underestimate the power of letter-writing and phone calls... or sitting in front of someone's office until they agree to see you and hear you out...
I guess I'm in a militant mode from fighting with insurance Either way, if you want it, and you know it won't hurt you, fight for it!
