Well, I may get some angry emails for this one, but I tried my first drink on New Years Eve (Surgery was Dec.7). That is very bad. I drank half a martini and it made me a little sick. I had wine here and there after that, but I started really drinking about 2 or 3 months out, I believe. I have stuck to one thing since I started drinking. Premium vodka (Grey Goose, Level, Ultimate) martini's or on the rocks. No dumping whatsoever and I have yet (with the exception of one night in Vegas, but I think it's because I was forced to wake up before I sobered up) to have a hangover. I'm not an alcoholic as far as I'm concerned, but I love to go out to bars and clubs and I wa****ting them pretty soon after surgery. What did your doctor tell you? Mine was pretty laxed. Oh, and a corona probably isn't a good idea unless you like drinking flat beer. Um, I'm not giving advice BTW, the just my story Liz

I wouldn't advise drinking at all. I was a big drinker before surgery, but alcohol is pure empty calories, you might as well be drinking away your surgery. I miss the alcohol big time, but its better to avoid it.

I started at about 2 months.. I might have had a sip or two before that though. Just try some calorie friendly drinks. Mixed drinks are the worst.

Hi Elida, I had the VBG so alcohol doesn't affect me like it does you RNYers My surgeon said to wait 6 months, but I didn't. I wouldn't advise beer though due to the carbonation or any other sweet mixed drink for that matter. I have diet coke and rum and that is low calorie and does the trick! Some of my RNY friends have gotten super sick after one drink so take it slow and see how it affects you, but I would wait another month or 2 before even trying it out if I were you. Good luck with the experiment Hugs, Sara

I'll probably get some angry emails as well, but I'm being honest so here we go.... In November I will be a year and a half out. As of right now I have lost about 170lbs(and Im still trying to lose a bit more) Now I had my surgery in May, I didnt try drinking until the fall I believe. I turned 21 6 months after the surgery and only then did I really start "drinking". I dont really remember drinking any time before that with the new stomach. Throughout the last year, I have tried many different things. They all effect me differently. Beer. I'm not a bit drinker so I really can't comment much on it. Usually it's just a swig or two here because I dont like it all that much, but my stomach didnt seem to have a problem with it. I'm young and trying to have 'fun' at the same time. I'm new to the going out scene and I'm still getting use to it all. I am a more hard liquor type of girl. I never drink it straight though. I love mixed drinks. Now when I'm at home and I'm having drinks with friends, I mix my own drinks. I usually have the sugar free or low sugar cranberry juice, hawaiian punch, orange juice or crystal light on hand and mix it with rum or vodka(those are my two favorites). But on more then one occasion, I will buy regular mixers(frozen or liquid) or order drinks out at resturants but usually will not have more then one or two. Not only because of the sugar but because I get drunk faster now too. I do go to bars(not frequently but being back at school I have gone the last couple of weekends) I usually try to drink my low sugar drinks before I go. For a reasons mainly being so I dont spend as much at the bar and because I only drinked mixed drinks I can only handle so much sugar. I also do shots at bar and dont really have problem with them either. I never really "dumped" with any of the mixed drinks I get. I dont think i've ever really dumped with a lot of sugar items-which isnt a good thing, I dont think. I mean I get sick to my stomach every now and then or have that crappy feeling that comes along with it, but for the most part I do okay with things. Last weekend was the first time I really started to feel a bit sick to my stomach. I had two cranberry vodkas and a sex on the beach. It was the sex on the beach that did me in. I've noticed it's the more sweeter the drink, the more sicker I'll end up feeling-obviously. But for the most part(which isnt really a good thing) nothing really makes me sick. I probably sound like a super lush or that I go out all the time, but since the surgery I can count on 1 hand the times I've drank too much. In the last week or two though, I have been watching myself more. I've limited myself to one drink at the bar and just one before I leave(mixing it myself) I know that it's empty calories and I usually try to make it up at the gym during the next week. I also noticed that sometimes when I drink too much, there is a buildup of gas. I usually have pains in my abdomen and once I have burped/hiccuped a few times, I feel much better. I have to be careful of not abusing my new stomach. But when I do drink, I always make sure I'm around people I trust and definitely never drink. Once I went out to lunch with a girlfriend, had a ****tail on an empty stomach and the one drink got me buzzed. lol. It was like 1pm and my friend looked at me and was like 'you need to eat, now." The alcohol hits you faster. Now that I feel like an alcoholic, I'm back to hiding.

Well Since i have had my surgery I just recently started to drink. Im 4months out and about two weeks ago i had my first drink and it didnt bother me at all and i didnt get sick. I had a bud light which is my favorite. I limit my self to two nights a week and no more then 5drinks when i go out. and i never drink the mixed drinks all though i would love to have a martini or daqurie. but there is my two cents..lol good luck, Brittany
