for those that are post-op, how soon did you go back to work? i've got an easy temp desk job and would love to get back to working after my oct. 10 surgery since i just sit all day doing data entry and if i don't work, i don't get paid. what is realistic?

Hi Kari I had Lap RNY, and was told to take six weeks off, because most likely I would be DRAINED. That was true in a way...BUT me being me, I only took two weeks off. I was in NO pain, and could NOT just stay at home doing NOTHING all day long, that wasn't me. And for 99% of my day I'm sitting in my office or in meetings. But really it all depends on how you feel. If you can put in for the six weeks, because you never know how you might feel. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT, then during your time off, if you really feel that you can return to work sooner, and your doc approves it, then go back to work if not, then stay home and enjoy the time off. I don't know if you are having open or LAP, but LAP is less evasive, and might require less time off. Hope this helps.

Well I had just started my job 3 months before I had surgery so I didnt have any dissability or any time off to take. I took 5 days off and was back to work feeling fine after that. I have a sit down job though, that makes a difference...and I had RNY LAP.

thanks for all the great ideas. i'm gonna put in for 5 days off (i'm getting LAP RNY) and see how i feel. the great thing about a temp job is that i can take as much time as i need (unpaid of course) without hassel.

I was told to take 4 weeks because keeping hydated and eating in the beginning is "like a full time job" according to my surgeon. I could ahve gone back sooner physically but mentally I am glad I had the time. I did feel tired soon after surg so it was also good in that respect.

I can't imagine being home for all that long. I hate being home doing nothing, I lose my mind and start cleaning everything I can find. I am having surgery on 10/25, I put in for two weeks off, but I told them not to be surprised if I show up sooner. My surgery is on a tuesday, I'd like to be back at work by the following monday. -Enzo
