REGECTED!!!
Well...tonight I got in the mail a rejection from Blue Cross. This is what it says... "Some medical conditions, either alone or in combination with the cost of medication, present uncertain medical underwriting risks. In view of these risks, we find we are unable to offer you enrollment at this time. Our decision was based on the following health history:
*A height of 5'9" and a weight of 300 pounds, exceeds our morbidly obese medical underwriting weight guidelines."
I guess I will just keep on it with Kaiser. I am going to make an appointment with my PCP on Monday for another consultation, I told him I wanted the surgery about 1 year ago and he told me that because I didn't have diabetes and my blood pressure was high but not high enough, that I would need a sleep apnea test. So I got my physc evaluation and forgot to turn the sleep apnea test in, so I need to make sure and get that done. But in the mean-time, i am going to apply for Health-Net, and see if I get accepted there. A friend of mine that had the surgery went from Kaiser to health-net so I will see my luck there.
Anyway, I am a bit bummed. I was hoping this would be it. I just got done talking with my mom in the car on the way home tonight about the surgery and how excited I was about applying for Blue Cross, then we pick up the mail and I am rejected! I will try and not get depressed about it. But I want this so bad. Anyway what can you do about it... after all, tomorrow is another day.....
Luv you guys!
Ash
Hey Ashley,
I am so sorry you didn't get on with Blue Cross, please don't give up though, keep trying with Kaiser. This can be a heart braking process sometimes, but the end result is worth it. Most people that I have talked with have had little or major set backs on their way to WLS, it's the ones that can keep going, that get it!!! We're all here for you!!

Thanks so much you guys for the support. I slept very restlessly last night just thinking about what I am going to go through, but I need it and my mom made a really good point last night while we were talking, she told me that it would be more harmful for me to stay overweight and reap the "benefits" of being overweight than to recover from the surgery. That really encouraged me, i am so thankful to have a very supportive family behind me. And I have the "WLS in your 20's" support as well. Thanks guys!
Luv ya

Hi Ashley...
I know it seems tough to deal with but what I have learned about Blue Cross is that they like to make you "jump through hoops" to get anything done. They like to see you keep trying and doing all the things you are supposed to do. My biggest piece of advice would be Don't give up! Keep trying, and if I were you I would resubmit to Blue Cross. I got approved for this procedure with Blue Cross with NO co-morbidities and one letter. It is possible, this site is living proof of that. So be bummed, you have every right to be... But get back on that proverbial horse and don't let someone else determine your future... If you want it, you will make it happen! Good luck.
I'm confused... wouldn't their reason to reject you MORE of a reason to have the surgery?? Hmmm.. I would suggest asking your surgeon's office to do a "Peer to Peer" with the doctor at BCBS and your surgeon. It sounds to me like their reasoning is BS. I swear sometimes they deny you in hopes that you'll give up! Aetna denied me because there supposedly wasn't enough proof that my doctors have told me to lose weight... HA At 400lbs and having been on Meridia (on dr's orders) for 3 yrs, their reasoning was a load of ****! My Dr. threatened to report them to the NJ Medical Board... he had an approval number moments later Keep fighting it! Don't let them get you down.
GOOD LUCK!

I had the same problem with Blue Cross...they decided with me to cover it and 2 weeks before my surgery date, changed their minds...they suck! needless to say I went through Kaiser and they covered it 100%! Good Luck Ash!! e-mail me if u have any questions [email protected]

I'm confused!! I thought you had Kaiser for an insurance provider, but that you were applying to enroll with BCBS, not that you had BCBS, and that they wouldn't cover the surgery..... Being obese it's very hard to find a private plan that will take you, your best bet would be to go through your employer's plan, or even your parents if you still qualify. I would definity focus on getting the insurance plan that you currently have to cover surgery!!

Yeah, I have had Kaiser all of my life. But they are not so good at approving weight lose surgery. But I am going to pursue it again with them. But in the mean-time I am going to apply for another insurance company...HealthNet. A friend of mine had no co-morbidities and applied on her own without an employer and got coverage fine. She previously had Kaiser but sent them to the curb. So she applied for HealthNet in April and got her appointment in May and had her surgery Aug 4. I am hoping that I would have such luck. But in for now, I will just stay with Kaiser and go from there.
