Question for those still living w/ parents

I'm 21 and live with my parents and am going to have my first meeting with the doc Sep 15. My folks are supportive, but my dad is really nagging me telling me the insurance needs to see some kind of proof of what classes I'm taking. And I know I'll just end up dropping the classes this fall cuz thats when the surgery will happen. He agrees I wouldnt be able to keep up with classes, and says he just wants me to enroll so I can provide him papers to proove I'm enrolled at a college. In my mind this seems too much. My question for all of you, Is it required for those under there parents insurance as a dependant to be Enrolled in college to qualify being covered for the surgery? I really dont think that whether or not I'm enrolled in a Junior College should decide the fate of my health. My dad on the other hand says he already told one of the employees I was enrolled somewhere and is whining he could be sued for fraud or something if I dont submit a class schedule.

If you are covered under your parents insurance as a dependent, but you are over 18, there is probably some kind of clause about the amount of school that you are in per semester or year. If that type of clause is there your dad is right in that they may ask for documentation. In some cases, you can take a semester off, in which case you could show them your transcripts from the last semesters or whatever, but basically, if they ask for proof that you were in school and there isn't any, they could back charge your dad for any medical coverage they've given you since when you were in school last or when you were 18. Good luck! Sarah

Yes, if you are covered under your parents insurance you have to submit proof you are attending school at least part time or else they won't cover you. You can also only be under your parents insurance until you are 23 then its against the law to be covered, since then you are technically considered an adult.

Hi ANdrew, Yes, you do need to enroll.... unfortuantely... But if you are able to have surgery, you should still be able to complete the semester... I had surgery 4 weeks ago today, and I was back at work the following Monday, one week later... I am sure that when you get your surgery date and if you talk to your professors about it, it won't be a problem to take the time off for this surgery... They can either just give you the work ahead of time etc. No need to lose a semester for WLS! Good Luck! Bridget 280/256/140 RNY 8/8/05

Thx for the info everyone. *Sigh* All the Junior Colleges in my area have already started! What should I do now? Would the insurance company accept the University of Phoenix Online as a current college, cuz I could sign up there I suppose.

As long as you can get a real degree from the school, it shouldn't matter whether it's online or not, but you should check your policy to make sure. Good luck!

Would attending a Vocational School count as being a full time student to the insurance companies?

It varies by policy. Make sure you have your parents call and check. But I don't see why you wouldn't be covered if you went full-time to a tech school. It's just like any other school, you know? I hope this works out for you. I know what it's like to have to play the insurance game. *sigh* Amanda

I checked into taking classes at U of Phoenix online and I do believe they make you take 2 classes at a time and require 15 hours of participation a week and you are considered a full time student as far as financial aid goes and I think it would count for the insurance as well. It seems like they have classes starting every week or every two weeks. When they called me with information it was a Wednesday and they said that if I wanted I could start that following Monday! Just wanted to let you know that it's probably an option for you.

Really look into what you take at the UOP online because if you try to transfer the credits to other colleges they may not transfer. I was just about done at UOP with early childhood education and went to start looking into going to UCONN and they told me they wouldn't accept the credits. So I am back at the drawing board and attending the community college near me and signed a transfer contract for Eastern Connecticut State University, and was accepted upon compleation. So as soon as I finish at the community college I will be all set. Do your research on the college and see what you can do. When did classes start at your JC? See if you can still get in if they didn't start that long ago.
