I FEEL LIKE GIVING UP.....
HELLO ALL, I AM NEW TO THIS BOARD, AND AM SEARCHING FOR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. I AM ABOUT TO RECEIVE A DATE FOR SURGERY, WITH JUST ONE MORE TEST TO GO. I WEIGH 377LBS (GIVE OR TAKE 4 LBS) AND FEEL LIKE GIVING UP ON THE PROCESS. I'VE BEEN DOING THIS FOR 8 MOS, (TRYING TO LOSE SOME WEIGHT) AND IT'S INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT FOR ME. I JUST FOUND OUT THAT MY SURGEON ONLY DOES OPEN RNY, NOT LAP. WHAT DO I DO?? HAS ANYONE HAD OPEN?? ANY COMPLICATIONS??? I'M NERVOUS. HELP
EBONY
Honey don't get discouraged you have come this far why give up now? I had open RNY and I came out fine, not saying that things can't happen but you just gotta put your faith in the lords hands and he will make everything alright. I was having so much anxiety as my surgery got closer I had a major case of the what ifs, I even had moments of regret when I first came home but thats over now. Im glad I took this step to a healthier me because I know without this I wouldn't have done it. I know that lap gives more cosmetically better looking results but I personally would want the surgeon to be looking directly inside of me to see what he is doing, and you never know the scar may not be that bad. Mine is better than I thought. Just stay strong and keep positive thoughts and you will be fine. If you ever need to talk or some support feel free to email me
Hey Ebony!!
First of all DON"T GIVE UP!! I know what it's like to fight for so long for this...trust me, i fought with insurance and doctors for over 4 years before I was able to do it! 8 months is nothin hon!
I started out not to far from your weight, I was at 366. Losing the weight before surgery isn't easy, hell if it was, none of us would be here.
I did have open RNY last september..and had no complications at all...i never had pain really, just that uncomfortable feeling from being in the hospital bed.
You have come this far, and are on the verge of getting that surgery date! don't give up! you'll regret it in the long run, i'll tell you one thing, i'd do this surgery all over again if i had too...
if you ever wanna talk you can find me on AIM: tigerspinkin, or myspace www.myspace.com/shannon_lee or just e-mail me [email protected]
Hello
I know exactly what your going through I also feel like giving up at certain time I spent so much of my time researching now that I finally found a sergouns whome I love I found out that my insurance wants me to go on a diet for 6 months with documents and dr visits and my weight recorded on top of all of the dr visits like psych eval and nutritionalist and 2 support group visits amongst a whole lotta other stuff it gets frustrating but remeber what your goal is remeber all of the perks and if all else fails come to us for help the people on here have been wonderful to me and we all either have been there or are going through it now but what ever you do dont give up we wont let you
Dont give up! Your sooooo close!
I was scheduled to have lap RNY untill in the operating room my surgeon found that my liver was huge and that all the rest of my organs were in such a compact space that he couldent do lap and had to open me up. I knew that if this or anything else happened during surgery that he would open me up. I really wanted lap before surgery, but I am totaly fine with having my scar. Anyways it is safer to have your surgery open and my surgeon says that there is less risk of complications later and the patients are more sucessful. The only bad pain that I had was right after waking up and it was in my upper chest and back , not where my inscision is. They told me that it was from the anesthesia (SP?) and I would have had it either way.
I did have a little pain though later in the hospital in my abdomen in general. It mostly felt like I had lost my abdominal strength and whenever I needed to get up or walk it felt like I needed to hold somethig for support. I hope that this does not scare you away, but I want to tell you the truth and tell you that they have very good drugs that they give you. Most of the time in the hospital you will be asleep and the rest you shouldent feel a thing. They ask you all the time to rate the pain that you are feeling. Most of the time I said it was a 1. They will usualy give you a morphine pump that has a button for you to push if you feel anything. Also, you can let the nurses know if it is not working and they will either give you a med to drink or increase the morphine dosage. Except for right after waking up my pain was way less than the pain a get with my menstural cramps which I rate as a 6 or 7. FYI: Right when I woke up I rated the pain as a 8.
This is so long, so if you have any questions at all post them in this thread and I will reply tomorrow or saturday or sunday. I read this board almost everyday! Also if you want I can take a picture if my scar and email it to you if your curious.
Dont give up your so close to a new life and you will not regret it!
Hi Ebony, Think of it this way...You would have wasted 8 months of your life worrying about all this for no reason if you give up now. I have been waiting since Oct 04 to get my consult which I just had a week and a half ago. I will be having sugery Oct 4th. Exactly a year from when I was put on the waiting list. Also open could be a blessing because with open surgery I think that they have more access to putting everything where it needs to go. I think you have more of a chance developing a hernia and more healing time but my Uncle had open at 366pds and has done tremendously well. He has lost 150 pds and had no complications. Good luck to you and remember everything happens for a reason. -Tiffany
You should definitly NOT give up! I started gears moving for surgery in January of 04 and finally got my Lap RNY in March of this year. It was a loong wait, but well worth the obnoxious-ness.
Good Luck!!!

PS: my brother had open RNY 5 years ago, and the only complications he suffered was a hernia...he had a 12" incision though (550 when he went in). Now a days, I think the incision is MUCH smaller.
