Hello all, im 1 month out and I wanted to start exercising before it's too late, and I was just wondering when did you start exercising? and what type of exercises did you start out with besides walking?

Honestly I think I over did it too early out. I've read on here as well as my doctor you should start walking daily from 1-month post-op. Well about 1 1/2 months post op I ventured out to try jazzercise. I ended up with complications (bowel obstruction caused by scar tissue) and I kinda think it was caused by over doing it. Just go easy and stick with walking for a while or something else very low impact like swimming. You're gonna lose no matter what so just take it easy and be careful. Good Luck on the rest of your journey! --Marianne 5'0 256/137/120

My Surgeon told me to start walking from day 1. I didn't do much (walking or anything else****il I was 6 weeks out and got the A-OK from him to go back to Curves. Since then, I've been at Curves 4 times a week. I also bought a bike and have been biking to work and back (3 miles roundtrip). Don't push yourself too hard at first--your muscles are still healing, especially with abdominal exercises! Jem 326.5/271/165

Jem, I just read your profile. You are a funny lady! I totally related to that whole pause-to-catch-breath-while-walking-uphill-and-try-to-cover-it-by-admiring-the-view. Can't tell you how many times I've done that. And while I'm still pre-opp, I'm looking forward to a time when bike-riding isn't a painful ordeal. I tried to bike around Yosemite last month and had a rude surprise. My ass hurt so bad, I skipped out on the fancy breakfast that was a 15 min. ride away. Don't ever want to be there again. Keep writing! As for the exercise thing, my doctor said he wanted me to start walking from day one. But just to walk, light weight training or other exercise should be done as you feel better, at least a month out. -Kari

Kari: Thanks! Good luck on your future surgery! In no time, you'll be sailing 'round Yosemite like Lance Armstrong! Jem 326.5/269/165

my doctor has you outta bed adn walking the floor of the hospital the day of surgery, then when you get home, walk. When i got home i did a walk around my house one lap every hour, then i did two every hour and so on and so on, then i ventured outside to get the mail and just kept going furthere and further, no i make it all the way around the block, and i know it doesnt sound like much, but pre op i couldnt even do that. :D _mike openRNY 2/25/05 623/500/200ish
