new to the forum
Hi everyone. I'm 21 and almost 3 months out. I just discovered this forum. Usually I just post in the rny one.
I'm wondering, how do your 20-something friends react to your decision to have/had wls? i have one bff that is really supportive and another that has disappeared from my life completely. have you had this happen to you?

Hi Sara!
I've had good reactions from friends about my upcoming surgery (later this month).
That being said, I haven't told many of them. In particular, I haven't told the friends who have never had a weight problem. Maybe I am underestimating some of them, but I am worried about being judged for 'taking the easy way out' as some people mistakenly believe. I've chosen to remain fairly private about the whole thing but I'm not sure how that will work out after the surgery.
I hope your disappearing friend realizes her mistake and comes back into your life, it's never fun losing a bff.

thanks LJ. i didn't tell many people either--just 3 friends that i thought would support me. 2 out of 3 are still there for me so i guess thats not bad. i just feel like i dont have many people i can talk to that are my age and will understand this huge life change that we wls-ers make, ya know?
also, congrats on getting approved. when is your date?

i was very lucky. when i first had surgery i told everyone i was friends with and that i worked with (that cared to know) and got no negative reactions (other than my one friend being afraid that i was going to die in the or lol). and the people i was good friends with were super supportive (and still are i just don't live/work there anymore). the only negative reaction i had was from my ex (we've been broken up for a loooooong time before my surgery, but we were still regularly talking at that point), but i expected it when i told him. he's one of the people that believes that if i really wanted to lose weight i could just eat only broccoli (yes he actually told me that before).

Those people really bother me. Obviously if it was easy there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic in North American society. I find it's usually not malicious though; people who have never had a weight problem often can't wrap their heads around food addictions.
Btw, I'll be having my surgery on June 26.
