Hello Everyone,
I am in the process of switching insurances...and I actually have my first appointment with my new PCP on January 3rd. I have been in contact with the new insurance companies weight loss surgery program and have already turned in all my requested weigh ins and just have to have my PCP send over the referral and then I will have to meet with the psych, dietician and have a few tests ran then I should be good to go for surgery, im being told that I should be able to have my surgery in March. I am so very excited about this because I really need the extra lil help from the surgery to lose weight so that I can get healthier and live my life as a healthy young adult rather than an unhealthy miserable young adult that feels 50! Anyways I was wondering if all of you can help me with any tips you have to prepare myself for surgery, food wise, and anything else I would LOVE all of the tips that I can get...thank you all ago and I look forward to sharing my journey with you all :)

Hi! Congratulations on this new and exciting step in life!!
I think one of the most important things to do before surgery is to mentally prepare yourself and form a strong support team that will be able to positively encourage you and help you when you feel down. One of my bigger issues when I got my Lapband was being so excited about loosing weight that I would sometimes get easily frustrated with setbacks. Remember that this is a process and takes time but as you progress you will really see and feel the positive changes.
Before surgery you should start to familiarize yourself with what a post- wls diet will be like. Discover and keep track of what protein rich foods you really like, especially ones you may normally not think of. It sounds kind of silly but I actually looked into vegetarian cooking to get some helpful pointers on where to find protein. I love meat but it's always helpful to find an assortment of alternatives. (For example: I switched from using 2% milk to skim because it has more protein and discovered that I love lentils and garbanzo beans and can now eat hummus like it's a tub of Ben and Jerry's). You should also do some research and taste test different protein shakes because a lot of them taste gross but there are most definitely ones out there worth knowing about. It's beneficial to read up on some recipes and snack ideas that are nutritious and good enough to keep you from having a "BUT I JUST WANT POTATO CHIPS!!" moment... Everybody's taste buds are different so it's good to find what works for you best (I'm over a year and a half out and still discovering random new things I like).
I found it helpful to brainstorm different exercise options because I tend to get bored easily. I like anything from hard core pilates to a good old fashioned Richard Simmons dvd work out to gym cardio to hiking in the mountains.
Good luck with everything and I hope this was at least a little bit helpful! Keep us updated on your progress and if you need anything (advice, more information, someone to listen while you complain etc.) I'm always here!
