Protein, I've found is a very personal thing. Some people might love one, others might not. I went to the local store in my area that sells protein and bought two kinds, unflavoured and french vanilla. The sales guy assured me it had no taste or smell when mixed with other things. I'm sure this is true for an average person, but after having RNY I seem to have aquired the super power of incredible sense of smell and I can smell the protein powder (and it's not pleasant and thus gives a flavour to the protein powder). I found initially, like right after surgery, the only way for me to get my protein drinks in were to mix the french vanilla with as little water possible and drink 1oz shots of it every fifteen minutes (as per my plan) while plugging my nose until I got in my shake. The other way was mixing a small amount of unflavoured into cream based soups (like reduced fat campbell's cream of broccoli made with skim milk). I think that most centres know that initially, especially with the small amount your stomach can hold and all the swelling, you will have a hard time getting in your minimum protein, but eventually you get to it the further out you get along your meal plan (like by pureed foods, you can start having pureed meat and that's all protein).

Now, I find the best tasting protein is one's I make myself. I'm currently finishing up the gross tasting unflavoured protein powder by making my shakes in the morning, I add a scoop of protein powder, a cup of skim milk, 2 tbsp of PB2 (defatted peanut flour), a tbsp of SF chocolate pudding mix and a couple of slices of frozen banana and a few ice cubes, blended together. It's delicious, but you have to experiment to find what you like. Another thing I really like is the Syntrax protein, it really does taste like the flavour advertised and I found on their site you can buy a sample pack of all their flavours so you don't have to put out a large amount of money and find out you don't like it. Once I'm finished the protein powder I'm currently working on, I'll be buying some of this.

The main point though, with any protein is you want something that gives you a good source of protein with limited calories, limited fat and sugar. Something like 100-140 calories, with 20-30 grams of protein, 0-2 sugars, 0 fat, is a good choice according to my plan. Some protein is meant for body builders, etc. and will be too many calories and carbs for us post op. Hope this helps.

Don't waste your money. Your sense of taste and smell will be off after surgery. And what you could tolerate pre-op you might not stand post-op for some time. Right now just work on eating protien first. If your going to buy protein powders get an un flavored. I hear Unjury un flavored is truely un flavored. So you can mix with an liquid of food really.

I was never required to do a liquid diet of any sort, and I get ill off of protein drinks. Its eat it or nothing.

I just started my 14 day liquid diet today for my surgery on January 5th. I bought Premire protein drinks, they are sold at Costco only. They don't taste horrible but they don't taste great either. I have heard they are highly recommended because they have 30 grams of protein per serving and only 1 gram of sugar. They are kind of pricey, $25/case of 18, they only come in Chocolate flavor also.
