hey my names justine, ive heard of OH for awhile now but decided to join today since my surgery is getting close. I was wondering if any of you girls post op have experienced hair loss or hair thinning?
HI Justine,
I'm about 4 and a half months out and have had some hair loss since about 2 and a half, three months out. I notice that my hairline on my temples is receeding somewhat, although is not noticable unless I wear a headband, and that my natural part is much wider. I've since moved my part over to become a deeper side part and you can't notice it too much. I found that I have naturally very thick hair and it's thinning out quite a bit, so when I go to the hairdresser, she doesn't do any thinning like she normally would, just trimming the ends and adding layers. I find that if I keep up with my hair maintenance, like continuing to style it at home (even with the dreaded flat iron) and regular hair cuts, it's not too noticable. As well, upping my protein intake seems to have helped a bit. Nothing you can't handle!
Good luck with your surgery!

thanks so much for the comment, im really nervous about things i have read and heard about hair loss for woman but i hope its not to bad for me because i have thin hair already and have been dying and high lighting my hair since i was in the 8th grade (junior now in college) but i recently stopped because of the whole hair loss. i heard certain woman use special shampoos, pills, and protein. how much protein would you say you consume now a day?
The shampoo is called Niacin, but to me, this doesn't make sense that it would help very much, the part of the hair that's 'alive' and requires the nutritients is in your body, so you need to treat it this way. Then there are vitamins that can present with hairloss if you are deficient. Biotin (I believe B6? maybe B7?) is the primary one associated with healthy hair and nails. Most multivitamins have a decent dose of biotin, and I was told as far as supplementing to stop hairloss, I would need to take an extreme dose and it would be quite expensive, so I'm just waiting it out because from what I've read on here, most people stop loosing around 6 to 8 months, as your body looses more slowly. Another vitamin sometimes associated with hairloss is zinc. Again, most multis have you pretty well covered. Protein is another issue that affects hairloss. I am told by my clinic that I need to take in 60 to 80 mg a day of protein. I found that by upping my protein to 80 to 100mg a day that my hairloss has lessened. I don't know if that's because of something that my body has figured out, or if it's the extra protein, but I don't mind pushing it to the 90s or 100s because I've finally found a way that I love my protein shakes (they taste like Reese's peanut butter cups) so I'm okay with that! LOL
The bottom line I've heard from this site is that hairloss sucks, it happens for most people and really all you can do is wait it out and focus on the positives, like how awesome you look and feel!

i had pretty thick hair but now its about half of what it used to be. the only part of it that really bothers me is that my hairline seems to have receeded a bit. but no one notices the thinning or anything except those that know me really well (and would notice hair lol) like my mom and best friends and sister....it's starting to feel like the top is a lot thicker than the bottom so i'm guessing it's starting to grow back
