New Kid on the Block

 Hey y'all!

I'm a newbie 'round here, and I just wanted to pop in and say hello. My name is Lily, and I've visited the site in the past...but I never posted anything. I'm 22 years old, from Tennessee, and I'm having Roux-en-Y on April 4th (so soooon).

Like most everyone, I'm nervous and excited and scared and about to burst. I'm struggling most with figuring out how to tell people about the surgery (or if I should). Everything I've read from you all has been super helpful and encouraging.

My mom had Roux-en-Y about 3 1/2 years ago and she looks incredible. So I have a great support person, but it's nice to have an outlet for people my own age.

I know nothing is really going to prepare me for what I'm about to do. I can't wait to change my life.

Any last minute (somewhat unknown) tips for immediate post-surgery?

:)

Thanks for the support everyone!

I had my pre-operative appointment today. Had to have some routine tests done--an EKG, bloodwork, and a chest x-ray. I went through so much of this pre-approval too.

I don't know if anyone else had to have an EGD, but that was another part of my requirement. Having the EGD was nice because it was like a little, mini surgery to prepare me for anesthesia and what to expect. I'm not as terrified of the operating room now.

Can any of you tell me whether or not you had major hair issues post-surgery? My mom lost a decent amount of hair, and I know she felt like she was losing most of it. She was horrified that she might end up looking like one of those 80 year old women with see-through hair. She didn't, but it still wasn't any fun.

Everyone in the hospital keeps telling me "You don't look big enough for this surgery." It's a bit irritating because I AM big enough and I have been approved by insurance. I weighed 261 initially and have a BMI of 41%! It's hard to feel like the people who are supposed to be support staff aren't supportive. I did have a sweet male nurse tell me "You're so beautiful now, but after surgery, you're gonna be a knockout." That was a nice confidence boost--I don't hear that hardly ever.

Anyway, feel free to add me on here! It's so cool to see all the transformations. Wish you all luck! :)
