I made it to the other side :) 4 days post op.

Well, I did it. Its still kind of hard to imagine but here I am. Now, I have some worries I want to share....

1.) I'm paranoid of complications. I'm trying to be positive and not think about it but its hard not to! I keep wondering how I'll know if there's a leak or something wrong. I know to look for the big signs- vomiting, redness, irritation, but is there more I should look for?

2.) Getting my fluids in. It's hard, it really is but then when I gave myself some no sodium chicken broth today (which was delicious) I ended up drinking the full 8oz in an hour. Is that too fast? I didn't feel full or overwhelmed by it, was I supposed to? I'm scared I'm not going to know what full is and I'm going to pu**** when my pouch is healing. I know its just liquid but I'm worried!

3.) I have days when the pain is unbearable and days when I have to remind myself I just had major surgery. My surgeon gave me 2mg pain pills of Dilaudid which everyone tells me was quite gracious of him when in fact, post op day 3 I was going to ask if I could have something stronger... Should the pill be helping? All it does is knock me out, not get rid of the pain.

4.) How much walking should I be doing? I'm walking around the house- and post op I was on my feet 3 hrs after surgery but should I be walking more than this?

I think that is all of my insanity bundled up into one post. I know I'm paranoid but I just want to see if I'm doing this right. I am SO scared to make a mistake.

 yay, no going back now!!!
1- I wouldn't go as far to say that complications are rare.. but you're much more likely to not have complications than you are to have complications. If you get sick, you will be in good hands. All you can do is all you can do! And worrying about it won't help you in any way.
2- I didn't drink much water after surgery, it hurt so much to fill my stomach. I did a lot of ice though. Your pouch cannot be streched out right now. Don't even worry about that at all.
3- Everyone is different. I was in so much pain I downed liquid loretab with more liquid loretab..which made me nauseated. I spent at least two days just passed out on pain pills. My sister, on the other hand, called me a baby. She never took any loretab and was a trooper, up and walking around and stuff. Pain won't go away until the swelling goes down and you finish healing up. If it feels like you were beaten up and stabbed in the stomach, that's normal.
4- I didn't walk much, to be honest. Most people say the more you walk the earlier you start feeling normal again. So, walk walk walk. Walk as much as you can. It probably can't hurt.

I know we already chat some but wanted to give you my 2 cents :)

1) I'm paranoid too. But just like Blair said... you can only control what you can control. My mentality has been "pouchie-poo, I will take care of you as long as you take care of me".

2) I'm having a really hard time. Just found sugar free popsicles though that have helped a lot. I couldn't do 8 oz. in an hour but my doctor wanted me drinking 8 oz in 1-1 1/2 hours in the hospital. I couldn't do it but if you felt okay then I think you are alright. Broth is an "inbetween snack" for me but I'm on only full fluids for 4 weeks post-op.

3) I've been walking a lot but I have a dog so I blame it on her getting me up and out. I have also found that I feel SO much better after walking with the gas pains.

Hope some, any, or all of this helps :)

Jess
