Update and Regrets
Hey y'all--
So I had VSG on 2/7/11 and on the 18th of Feb I got really sick and stayed that way until the 20th of Feb. On the 20th I went to the ER at WFUBMC (where I had my surgery). [side note: I had driven home to Asheville, NC after returning to school one week post-op, because my mother had total knee replacement surgery on Feb 17th. I go to school in Winston-Salem, NC, which is also where I had my surgery.] So anyways--on the 20th of Feb, my father and I made the ~100 mile drive to winston and I was immediately placed into a bed in the ER. After throwing up, dehydration, temps of 103 and some of the worst chest pain ever...along with 2 cat scans--they discovered I had a small leak in my staple line that was near my diaphragm. The surgeon told me that they had two options: 1: emergency surgery that would be very dangerous -since I was almost 2 weeks post-op or 2: wait for it to heal on its own. I was in the hospital until Feb 25th...just 1 day before my 21st birthday. The leak is fixed, but I am still nauseous and not wanting to drink my liquids. I am on IV fluid and TPN at home and hopefully they will take that away this Thursday. I have missed so much school and I'm just really depressed/regretting this surgery. I feel horrible and I just wish all this pain would go away :[[

I hate hate hate to be positive when what you really need is someone to just agree with you and comfort you!! DARN IT!!
But you had surgery and there's no looking back....And to be cliche, what doesn't kill you (thank God!) will only make you stronger.
Here's to your recovery, getting back on track in school & life, & other successes. (:

my best friend had surgery march of last year and he had major complications. he spent three months in the hospital because of malpractice on the doctor's part--he left part of his stomach open, it seemed--but after all the weight he's lost, he's still glad he had the surgery. he missed tons of school and even became addicted to narcotic pain killers (doesn't it sounds like a movie or something?) and yet he's still happy he had it because of the weight loss he's experienced. i think everyone has buyer's remorse at some point, complications or not. a couple of weeks ago, i was regretting my surgery too. i'm sorry all of this happened to you and i imagine it sucks so badly but hopefully, it won't suck forever and soon enough, you'll be more thankful than anything. just keep your chin up!!
Boo! What a horrible post-op experience! :( Hopefully you will only continue to improve!!
