Hi guys! I'm Diana and I'll be 28 in March.   I am currently in the pre-op phase.  I have some insurance hoops to go through first.  I have to do a 6 month physician supervised diet, sleep study and a psych assessment for the insurance company to authorize the surgery.  I am planning on being done with the 6 mo supervised diet in April and having surgery in late Apr or May.  It seems the closer I get to April the more anxious I am becoming. Not because I'm scared, but because I want this WLS so badly that if the insurance company denies me (for whatever reason) I will be absolutely devastated.  The surgeon's office has a patient advocate that helps with insurance paperwork and things, and she said I just have to prove that I'm trying to lose weight.  I've actually gained 3 (initially gained 5 then lost 2) lbs since starting the physician supervised diet.  I'm going to chalk that up to the holidays, and the anxiety.  I've already done the sleep study and the psych assessment.  I think the problem here is that things that I thought would happen to me don't end up happening for whatever reason and I guess I'm just so anxious about this really happening.  Anyone else out there have this problem?

Hi Diana! My name is Brenna, and I am actually going through ALMOST the same thing as you. I have actually been denied by my insurance once, got a new insurance company, and they didnt cover it, and now i am on my husbands insurance that does cover it, and although things have been going pretty good so far (i was supposed to have the 6 month supervised weight loss, but found out last week that my husbands employer picked the insurance plan that DOESNT require that, so i can start sooner with my psyc evaluation and nutrionist, and have the surgery in as little as 3 months!!) But i still cant help but worry constantly that something will go wrong, and i dont think i could handle it, i would be so devestated. But, im having faith that things will work out, and im sure they will for you as well! You have to keep in mind, everything happens for a reason...and whats meant to be..will be!...I will cross my fingers and toes for both of us that everything will work out, and we both will be sharing surgery stories and by this time next year we will be skinnier and healthier!!!
What surgery are you looking into getting?? If you ever need someone to talk to...im here! I hope everything works out for you....i know it will!!!!

Hi Brenna, Samantha and thepouchedpotato!  Thanks for your guys comments.  @ Brenna, you're right everything happens for a reason.  I do believe that.  It must not have been my time earlier.  And now I have an almost 2 year old daughter and I want this so badly to ensure we eat healthier meals and she doesn't end up big too.  @ Samantha, Good Luck today!  Post before and after pics!! @ thepouchedpotato, I'm doing the RNY and my husband is doing the sleeve (that's the VSG, right?)

I am the same way, I have a 3 year old and 1 year old, and i am so terrified that they will have bad eating habits and be heavy because i set a bad example...i cant wait to be able to run around with them, and play with out getting tired...and if they see me eating healthier, im hoping that will instill better eating habits for there futures. That is so awesome you and your husband are doing it together! has he had any trouble with insurance or anything?

No my husband has never tried to do the WLS before.  I was the one who went to the surgeon's office first and had them call the insurance company to see if our insurance company would pay for something like that.  We do know one of my husband's coworkers that has had the RNY done, so we KNOW for a fact that they cover it.   It will be great to get it done together so we can BOTH change our eating habits together.  We are so excited! (and anxious too ).

i gained a lot more than 3 (or 5!) lbs during the 6 month supervised diet. and honestly it was more proof that no matter what i did i kept gaining weight. i was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy in december of 06 (they actually think a virus attacked my heart and caused all hell to break lose in my body because they have yet to find any other explanation), i was 174 at the time of the diagnosis and within 2 weeks i was pushing 200. from that time on no matter how much i dieted and worked out my weight just kept going up. i guess it was around spring 09 when my cardiologist brought up the words weight loss surgery and i was completely mortified. i shrugged him off until i went on vacation in orlando and the airplane seatbelt was tight, then i barely fit into the rides and decided enough was enough. i was around 235 at that point and made an appointment to meet with the surgeon asap, that was november 09. by the time my surgery came around in september i was up to 251. as of this morning i am at 184 and feeling good. i actually had an appointment with my cardiologist this morning and he is cutting my main medicine in 1/2 (instead of 2 25 mg pills a day i'm taking one), and he is taking me off my lipitor.

oh and even with the weight gain i didn't get an ounce of resistance from the insurance company, i actually didn't even know the surgeon's office had sent anything in yet when i got the call

Hi Diana.  I'm Danielle, I'm also 28 with 2 small children, ages 2 and 4.  My surgery has been approved and is scheduled for Friday.  I too had to do the 6 month medically supervised diet.  Once I finished that they sent the approval request and I actually got a denial letter the first time and the insurance coordinator told me the notes my doctor provided were not detailed enough.  So after having my doctor beef up the notes to include details about what specific diet and exercise I was doing, the insurance company approved it.  Just make sure your doctor has detailed progress notes that include, weight, vitals, diet details and exercise regimen details and I'm sure you'll be approved.  I only lost 5 lbs on the medically supervised diet, but I wasn't honestly trying all that hard because I didn't want my BMI to dip below 40 since I have no co-morbid conditions and would then not be approved by insurance.

I also want to set a better example for my kids.  I'm much more restrictive as to what I let them eat than I am with myself.  But telling my kids whats right isn't quite as effective as showing them what is right.  Hoping I will be a better example and won't feel self conscious this fall when I coach my daughter's soccer team again.
