Thinking about surgery--- Serious Questions to ask yourself...

Take the time to read through these, and if there are any you want to add please do.

1) Has weight been a life long struggle?

2)Do you lose weight easily on a diet, that just changing your habits or portions work?

If yes, the VSG is the way to go. You metabolism isnt completely jacked at this point so you have a good chance of being sucessful. Or if you want to risk the Lap-band...have at it a 80% complication rate and 33% sucess rate isn't appealing to me (thats from the makers own site).

If no, its time to look into a malabsorption procedure.

3) Are you aware of the One WLS per lifetime that many insurance policies are now putting in place? What this means to you is say even though you have alot to lose and still choose the VSG and take on the oh I'll get the switch later if the VSG alone was not enough are **** out of luck for a revision unless you self pay.

4)Think about your lifestyle, who you are and beyond the honeymoon stage of WLS. Look into all 4 major surgeries- DS, VSG, RNY & Lap-band. DO NOT just pick a procedure because butterflies, puppies and rainbows were blown up your butt about once specific procedure. Think about how you want your life. How many "restrictions" can you follow, think about if your going out on dates, or out with friends. You understand that with some procedures you many never get to have a drink again? Because of side effects, like dumping. Look into all of it. There is a HUGE problem of thinking of just the weight loss stage...once you get into maintenance things aren't always so pretty. Thoes wows do dissapear. You have to live with this your whole life...so think long about thoes ramifications. Also talk to folks ask for the good and bad, if they won't tell you anything that isnt percieved as good...worry. And don't let "preconcieved" ideas about one surgery dictate that you will not seriously look into it.

5) Do you always believe what someone says is true? If you answer no, guess what that also appiles to Drs and Surgeons. If a surgeon doesn't do a certain procedure... HE'S GONNA TWIST FACTS OR SHOOT IT DOWN COMPLETELY. You are nothing but a dollar sign. Don't forget YOU HIRE them not they pick you. Some surgeons truely do care, others are mill surgeons and you are nothing but a number and a paycheck.

If you want to add more please do.

Great post Nicole!  You raise some really good points, especially in regards to the one WLS per lifetime.  I have started to see a lot of posts about this on OH lately.

Perhaps you should post on the main board as well?  This might help some folks.

The main board gets pretty much covered. But it might be worth it...I'll think on it for sure.

Just I know the youngins like me get ignored over here (in a way I don't blame them). As someone who is 5.5 years post-op, I have lived through this in my younger 20's years. And it tends to be so many that just follow blindly.  I see alot of talk of someone who is only 2-3 years out as a good example (mother, sister...family members). I've been in maintenance that long. I hate reading about folks that have problems, all because they didn't think it all through and think about past losing the weight.

I know some think I come off opinionated here, but damn it I've been there. Hell I had surgery when alot of folks on this board were still in HS and maybe middle school. Wow sometimes thinking like that makes me feel old. But everyday I read I appricate more and more that I researched my options. I find some don't realize the ramifications that WLS might have on dating and relationships. Its one thing if your married already or older, but at a young age its a way different world. But god forbid that anyone thinks beyond the now.

With SO MUCH info now available...including a 3-5 year study on the VSG which is looking to be as sucessful as the RNY (basically looking at 40% success rate after 5 years).

Ok I'm done now, lol. So hows your DS treating you?

So, when are you going to lend me your DS for a day. I will give you my pouch. I think you can handle her for one day. I'll tell her to be nice and not give you dumping syndrome. LMAO!

Hopefully Dr. K will give me my own, so I won't need to bug you about it:-)

If you gave my your pouch for a day, I wouldn't be able to eat at all. lol. I'm allergic to artificial sweeteners, so its real sugar or I'm gonna enjoy a swollen throat. Your pouch would freak with one day spent with me. LOL. Ya know like the Godiva chocolate bar I ate last night. By golly that hit the spot though. Sorry not trying to be bad, its just true.

I do hope Dr. K can help. From what you say your pouch pretty miserable in general. I'll keep my pyloric valve and hope you get yours back too!

My DS is great.  Lost 34 kilos so far (3 months).   The only thing I struggle with is that my tummy is so so small that I literally have to eat all day or I don't make my protein goals.  I love the fact that I have no hunger at all.  No gas or intestinal problems even when I eat carbs (not eating that many but still).  I focus on the protein - but have a bite of chocolate or cake if I want some.  No use in depriving yourself.  I am also 27.  I got the DS because I have 55 years left to live (!) and I want to be thin for the rest of my life.  I can't go through all this and gain weight again.  I take my vitamins - honestly its not that big of a deal.

People!  If you BMI is over 50 (or close to that) please please look at the  DS, its your best option.

Sounds like your doing great! Also have a great outlook on it. You'll do fine. I can say maintaning with the DS is not to difficult. It really comes down to watching simple carbs.

Oh I can agree that its so nice to not have to deprive myself of anything. Just have to be mindful. And I still have to eat more now than I did pre-op... eating isn't on my mind to often now you could say, lol. And some days I'm not hungery at all. I am pretty lucky with no intestinal or gas problems. But as we know thats mainly controlled by diet with the DS anyway. Not to difficult to control.

I don't think i have had more than 2 bites of sweets.  I usually have one bite and that is enough.  Everything tastes sooooo much sweeter than pre-op.   I do watch the carbs but have not eliminated them all together.

Ah the over active taste. It will diminish over time. I forget what was the one that set me off back in the day. Its been a while, lol. And with the DS thats all you have to watch is your simple carbs. I've been maintaining for over 3 years now. And it really is that easy. Jus****ch the labs and keep with the vites and all should be well.
