surgery fast approaching, having second thoughts...

My VSG is scheduled for this Friday 2/11/11, but I keep having second thoughts as to if this is the right decision.  I've struggled with my weight all my life and after hitting my highest weight ever I decided to do something about it.  I picked the VSG because I've had limited success on traditional weight loss programs, always losing, but then gaining that and more back.  I'm hoping the VSG will help me with portion control since I won't be able to eat in the quantities I normally would and I won't be able to eat all the fast food that has taken over my life.  I also really want to be healthy and set a good example for my kids...I don't want them to struggle with their weight like I have.  I also want to reduce my risk for breast cancer as weight has been linked to increased risk and I have 2 women in my family suffering from this disease already.

Did anyone else have second thoughts and how did you feel after you had the surgery?

Hi, Congrats on your up comming surgery. I had the realize band done 3/20/09 and it has been the best decision I have made for myself. I don't remember having second thoughts until right when I got to the hospital and they were going to put the IV in me and then I started getting nervous. The only advice I can give to you is make sure you are fully aware of the life long commitment you are about to embark on and that you are doing it for all the right reasons, (which it sounds like you are.) Learn as much as you can about how this will affect your life and go in with an open mind as to all the great possibilities that come with it. Good luck!

We all have second thoughts and get nervous as surgery approaches. Afterwards I was just very greatful for my morphine pump and lortabs every 4 hours. It's good stuff:-)

Was just messing with you about the painkillers.  Try not to stress too much. You will be greatful afterwards.

Best wishes:-)

eventually you will be able to eat fast food again... but don't let that make you change your mind about trying to be healthier! you can cook food similar to fast food that is healthier for you, or you can simply make better choices when you do have fast food.

Second thoughts....not a one. But if you are having them you may want to post pone....just to make sure. Do we all get butterflies because surgery is a major deal, but if your having second thoughs...WAIT!

How did I feel after surgery...just fine and dandy. I quit the pain meds by Weds ( went in on a Monday). And I was an open procedure.

I am asking this kindly.... Why are you wanting a strictly restrictive procedure when you went on diets and simply restricting your intake did not help? Especially if you have struggled with weight your whole life. I ask this sincerely. A VSG will not change a messed up metabolism. It only restricts how much you eat not what you eat. You will still absorb every bit of what you eat weather it be part a McDs burger or a salad.

Think twice cut once....as now many insurance policies have a one WLS per life time clause, no matter if you had surgery under another insurance company some years back. I understand that you may say its safer....all WLS procedures are within a point of having the same surgical risks and complications are mainly based on the patients pre existing conditions.

I do find the VSG superior to the RNY and do suggest it to thoes who it would be good for, but for overall superiority for weight lost and kept off the DS has no equal.

As I said none of this is bashing, just serious questions to ask yourself especially if having second thoughts.

I have not had my surgery yet (still waiting on insurance), but my bf has had rny and has been very successful. He had second thoughts just before his surgery and didnt go through with it the first time. 6mths later he really regretted not going through with the surgery and he had to start all over again. He went through with his surgery the second time around and he hasnt regretted it once.

Just take deep breathes and think about how much better you will feel when you lose just some of your weight, let alone when you reach goal. This is a life changing experience and it is ok to be scared.

Just remember that we are all here for you!

Good Luck!

I had the RNY and I never had second thoughts EXCEPT when my mom and I made my plan for where I wanted my stuff to go "just in case".  It's the best decision I ever made for myself and I'm healthier, happier, and hotter (ha ha) than I've ever been in my entire life!! :)

I think you seem to be very well informed so you are doing good, just remember this is a life long commitment to being a better healthier you and you CAN do it!

So I spent all day and night thinking about this and everything everyone has said.  I think its more of surgery anxiety, like I don't have to do this, my health is in no imminent danger (at least for now) and is being put to sleep for this worth it.  I have this HUGE fear what if something goes wrong, what happens to my kids.  Then I get this panic moment.  I've had several surgeries and do remember going in for my c-section with my husband thinking I'm just willingly walking in there so they can cut my stomach open and it freaked me out then too.  I'm going through with this, I know it will benefit me, my family and my kids in the long run.
