hi all :) newbie-still in pre-op phase

Hey everyone :)

I'm Katie and I'm 22.  I'm currently in the pre-op phase and am looking forward to my RNY in late April/early May.

My surgeon has advised to me lose 40lbs prior to my surgery to lower my BMI to reduce risk of blood clots and to avoid having to have a filter placed into my vena cava.

I'm super excited that I started this process and I cannot wait till my surgery :) :)

Any advice on pre-op foods or preparations?  I know I still have a few months to go, but I want to be as prepared as I can be (plus, the month of january is already gone, so I know time is just going to FLY)

Thanks!

Katie

Welcome..... this is the best place to be for tips/help and support!

As prep for surgery, I have just chosen to cut out the high fat, high sugar no good foods that I know I will not be eating after...  I have up'd my fluid intake and I work out at least 1hr/3x a week.  I have lost 37 pound so far in 4 months......

If you need any support I would be happy to help.  I haven't had surgery yet but would be happy to answer any questions you have after I've had it...

Hi Katie welcome to the board and congrats on your upcoming surgery!! Youre right , the time will FLY by and itll be here before you know it.  My best advice as far as diet goes is to take advantage of protion control... use smaller plates- it makes it look like theres more on there and kind of tricks your brain haha also take lunch to school/work and use small containers... try to only have maybe half a sandwich and then bring a larger portion of carrots and ranch or another healthier option! Hope your pre-op journey is wonderful and if you have any questions or need advice on anything feel free to ask!

Thanks everyone!

I've cut back on portions and am following a low carb, low fat, high protein diet.  I had my personal trainer check it out and he said I'm doing a great job with the food and he also thinks its great that i'm logging and keeping track of what i put in my mouth. Plus I blog everything I eat, and broadcast it on my facebook that way people can see everything and that way it helps me not cheat.

I'm using smaller plates and i also bought infant utensils to help take smaller bites and eat slower.  it defintely helps! i've been doing this for almost 2 weeks and i've been working out like crazy so i cant wait to step on the scale soon!  my surgeon didnt want me on the scale until i see him again but i see my ob/gyn on the 8th so he'll weigh me.  Then I also see my nutritionist and psyhcologist for pre-op counseling on the 9th, so i'm hoping the nut will weigh me also, on the surgeons scale (they're all in the same office).

I cant wait to go back and see my surgeon again! i see him on the 15th, and i'm starting all my pre-op testing next week.  :) :)

ppssssst - if you're working out a lot, don't be discouraged if the scale isn't moving as much as you like, you might be losing fat and gaining muscle!

you should take measurements in addition to weighing. seeing the inches disappear is just as satisfying as dropping a jean size, and even more satisfying than seeing the scale move

OH yes.  The muscle thing i'm VERY aware of. lol.  When i go to my trainer today i'm going to ask if he can do my measurements.  I've been meaning to ask him but I forget all the time.  lol.

I currently have a pair of jeans sitting in my laundry basket that i want to wear soon.  I should maybe try them on.  Its been a while.

@samantha, are you excited for your surgery next week?

When you first started everything... were you like.. "jealous" of the people who were so close to it or had already had it?  Idk why i'm feeling that because I know my time will come, and will probably be here sooner than I realize... But I'm really stoked about everything and I just wanna get it done. lol.

well, 3 of my aunts had surgery and i wasn't very jealous at first more like envious, then my mom told me i should have the surgery, so we looked into it. i didn't have to wait, i was pre-approved. i did get my surgery date 3 months before my surgery because my surgeon is so busy he is all scheduled up until about 3 months out from when people can get a date.

and yes, i am VERY EXCITED!!!!!! 5 days left!!! if you count today! :D
