So I wanted to get an IUD. I'm currenlty taking birth control pills and using condoms for birth control. I have heard that I probably will not be able to recieve an IUD since I do not have any children? I'm looking for some input and advice....thanks OH family...

They encourage you not to get it before you have children, but there is no rule in the publications saying you can't get one without a child.

I recently talked to my gyno about getting an IUD because I would like to finish school and get married before having children. I have no children and she said that I was still a good canidate for it. I decided to go the pill route because my insurance wouldn't cover it. Best of luck for you though.

DON'T DO IT!!!!! First of all, the string on the IUD comes through your cirvex and he can feel it! It is like fishing line and feels like a needle poking him if your dr cuts the string too short or if it is in an odd position during intercourse. Also, I complained about pain immediatly after my doctor put mine in, he said it was normal and take tylenol, it would go away. I called back several times over the next 7 months complaining about pain, he said not to worry. Finally 8 months out, I collapsed of pain, the dr. assumed it was my appendix. After taking an x-ray he discovered the IUD floating in my abdomen. It perforated my uterus! When he said he was going to try to take it out the same way he put it in I left and went to another hospital. I had it taken out at University of Iowa hospital, they said there was no way to get it out with out having surgery. You are also at higher risk for pelvic inflamitory disease and tubal pregnancy even after it comes out due to scar tissue. I hate to scare you, but my experience was a nightmare!

I had the mirena IUD put in a month after my surgery and have done fine. I did have pain when it was inserted and believe me it is more than a pinch. There is a risk of preforating your uterus but I personally have had no problems and would recommend it to others. Also a plus side is that I have not had a period since March. They said in some cases your period stops completely and I think that is a huge plus.

Hope this helps.

I had Mirena put in 2 weeks before my surgery, have never had any children, and have had it for 2 years. There have been no complications and it's been effective. Don't let one persons negative experience mar your ultimate decision. Talk to your gyno for more info.

I also had the Minerna IUD inserted about 2 mos prior to surgery, and have had it in about 2 years now. The insert of it, was very painful .. but since I havent had kids they told me that was normal to be in discomfort. I have had no problems with my IUD, periods are very light and last about a day, if I even get one. The IUD has worked great for me.

If you want to get somewhere you have to know where you want to go and how to get there. Then never, never, never, give up!
