Felt Like MAJOR Outcast
Last night I made a trip down to the hospital where I had my sugery for my first suppport group. Needless to say... I was an outcast and I felt very awkward. There were about 15 people there and the next person closest to my age was probably 30 years older than me. The topic was about staying on track during the holidays. Alot of it didn't seem to pretain to my life style. I had to listen to 3 older ladies banter back and fourth about who could sollow huge pills and who couldn't. I just thought to myself, "**** I'm still on liquids/chewable stuff, except my nexium. I'm sure glad I don't need potassium, glucoasmine and whatever else they're talking about."
The thing that sucks is where I live they only do a gastric bypass support group and where I had surgery they only have the support group I attended last night. I know support is key to success, but is only using OH, family and friends enough? I guess I have to be judge of that, but being so early out I just don't know!!!
Thanks for listening!!!

Hey Kelby! I havent even gone to my support group yet! :P Im skipping Decembers cause they are doing a gift exchange but plan onchecking it out inJanuary. Are there any other hospitals in your area that do one? Often you dont need to be a patient!
We had surgery around the same time, so if you ever want to bounce stuff off me or compare - shoot me a line!

hey.. the city i live in has 1 hospital which they only have rny groups and the next place is where i had surgery and that is the one i attended last night. i live in nd and the next nearest place to look at it over 3hrs away... thats too far for a support group. i think i may stick with OH.. you all seem to be just what i need
If you feel like you absolutely need more emotional support, the RNY support group might not be a bad idea. A lot of the problems will probably be different, but the emotions are the same. I dunno about yours, but at my support group we have a psychologist and a nutritionist. If they do the same thing at the RNY support group, you might find that they can answer specific questions one on one. Just a thought.
I haven't gone to any of the Support Groups since I have had surgery. I always felt like when I wanted to go they were doing some sort of pot luck or something I wouldn't be interested in hearing about so I just haven't gone at all.
During my early stages of WLS, I came on this site and got all my answers and posted on the forums for support....
I think if you truly feel awkward at your Support Groups then don't go :)
