Okay so Im still iffy about surgery. I get back on insurance in jan, this is somthing ive been considering for a while but I have told 1 friend and my mother (whose had wls). Im just terrified of how other people may judge me I have a rather large circle of friends. I was just wondering how everyone else delt with this situation and and advice you could give me.
I'm having surgery on the 8th and I have only told 1 person outside of my family (my friend who is also considering wls) about what the surgery is actually for. I'm afraid of the judgment as well so I feel that the surgery is for me so I don't have to tell everyone about it. If you don't want to tell your friends you don't have to, although if your not okay with making up another reason your having surgery they may just assume you had wls. Unfortunately the process and reasoning behind wls isn't very well known, especially among young people, so judgment is very common. Good luck and remember "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission."
I choose to tell my friends. Yes there are a few distant ones that I didn't tell, but I also am not going to hide it. I chose to tell each friend individually. That way if they had questions they could ask me individually. I have had nothing but positive support from my friends and family. It was no secret I needed to do something about my weight and I think everyone is supportive in the fact that, that is EXACTLY what I am doing.
Remember this is your choice. Let people be judgemental. You should be doing this for yourself not anyone else.
Best of luck to you on your journey!

My thoughts are that this is only a tool. In order to look my best I am still going to have to work my ass off! Eating smaller portions loses the initial weight, but once you get to that lower range you have to work just as hard as anyone else to look good. I've told a few of my close friends.
I don't think I should be labeled, or have my hard work discounted just because I had surgery.
