I didn't lose that much. They tend to be strict about the pre-op diet, so you probably have to lose something. anyway, here's how I went about it (and still do):
Deep breath, as you said :) Try to manage the stress in your life so you're not eating to relieve stress. Try to NEVER feel guilty about what you eat, but do keep a food log and track your calorie intake. If you eat something you "shouldn't", write it down and adjust what you're eating the rest of the day to make up for it.
If you feel like you're starving, then you should actually eat a little more. You want to feel like you're just barely hungry. Slow down when you're eating and ask yourself between every bite if you are feeling hunger pangs at that moment. Try to talk to someone while you eat so it takes a good 15-20 minutes to finish one plate. Then exercise - which will bring your body into a calorie deficit where hopefully you'll lose some weight.

i wasnt required to lose any weight before surgery, my surgeon said it would be a good idea but didnt say it would be the end if i didnt. I ended up gaining a couple pounds because i had severe last supper syndrome.....for a week lol
