The "S" word ~ let's talk snacking!
So, this is an issue that no one is immune from no matter if you're pre-op, newly post op or years out...snacking. If you are like me, I get an icky, naughty feeling in my lil stomach when I see the word as if it ranks up right there with opening someone else's mail or jaywalking....ok, maybe not jay walking but you get my drift!
Now, snacks can be a good thing...in fact, I believe they are. I think where snacks get their bad rap is when we start eating the wrong foods at the wrong times for the wrong reasons. I myself have been dealing with this lately and the weigh gain associated along with it and guess what? I FEEL HORRIBLE..both guilt-wise and physically. Who would have thought that 5lbs would make me feel like I was back at 250lbs? Well, I'm actively taking steps to help myself shed that weight and get back to feeling good because that's what it's all about!
I want to know what you all think about snacks and how you feel you can incorporate them into your life without the guilt. What sort of snacks do you have? Don't be shy, there's no right or wrong..it's what works for you and I'd love to hear it! I really try to have some Greek yogurt in the afternoons during my "danger zone" time otherwise some fruit or veggies do the trick before dinner. Let's here what helps you!

hihi,
as you know lately ive been dealing with the feeling of guilt myself, ive been evaluating "why" ive been feeling this way, and honestly im just so scared of gaining my weight back. i think. its funny losing all this weight has helped me shed alot of unconscious feelings ive had underneath all my weight that was holding me back from so much, and now i feel ive uncovered a set of new probs. (idk if that makes sense to anybody else? im pmsy and ranting. lol)
and some things that have been helping me are:
1. proportion. if we have snacks from time to time and eat them smartly, we are not going to end up back to our original weight. i eat chocolate, im not going to lie, but i keep in my head that there are limits. a year out, i feel like ive learned alot about control.
2.keeping your house stocked with heathy things and not the "wrong" things for our lives. i had a problem last week because i had thrown a work bbq for everybody who works for me, there was chips & dip, and massive amounts of desserts (they make fun i want to fatten them up since i dont eat much myself, lol).feeling tempted, i took the extra stuff to work during the following week or made my boyfriend take some to his office.
i always keep on the go snacks handy in the cabinets and in my purse also. to just grab and go, so in those tight situations (standing in the mall food court, stumped at what to get bc your surrounded by unhealthy options most of the time, sometimes even a tuna lunch kit helps out so much!). in my purse i usually have a protein bar, cereal or protein shake mix!
3. planning. sometimes its hard to know where you are going to be next, but planning sometimes is key, and ties into the having the grab & go snacks ready for consumption in your house! i work all differant hours, but the day/night before i try to pack my lunch box with snacks and have a meal ready to throw in for the next day.
4. idk about anybody else, BUT I am a bad snacker while cooking. so what ive incorporated is having a protein shake or iced water while cooking esp if its something that has to cook a while after preperation. it totally helps and you dont get ridiculously full while cooking that you dont want to have the yumminess your cooking for you!!
what kinda snacks?
peanut butter balance bars, tuna lunch kits (more for a lunch), cheese sticks, coffee, protein shakes, fruit (i try to stay away from apples they hate my pouch!), hummus, black beans..
i always find new things just browsin the aisles at the health food store.
i know this kinda went off topic but i hope it helps!!

UGH. snaking is very hard for me! I dont get hungry pretty often so when i snack " i try to keep my metabolism going" i feel so guilty (cuz im not hungry) ,even tho i eat to little sometimes like 800 cal or less per day n excercise( i try to eat bettwen 1000-1500 cal.****ep remindng myself I NEED TO EAT! so i try to have helathy snaks like apples veggies, cheese or cereal bars, fruits and stuff like that. (i'm bad at protein snacks)
i tent to be very radical so i have to be very careful with my snacks, if i sanck something high carbs or high fat I tent to make bad chooises during the rest of the day so I have to be extra careful with food chooises early in the day :S.
I'M convinced that this is also a eating desorder, my sister says i eat too little n I think i eat too much. I really have to find some way in the middle n not be to radical. I'm still figuring this out n i'm almost 3 years out
but I know i'll struggle with this all my life. i still gain weight pretty easy if i don****ch what i eat and my excercise routing. so I keep on track but is SOOO HARD! but it worth it! , i dont wanna be where i was 3 yeas ago never again!

I totally agree with you Mariana, I also gain weight so easily so I have to be very careful all the time. It think it's harder to maintain than anything else, really. My bad time of day is anywhere from 2-6pm....I really have to watch it in that time frame otherwise I go nuts. My breakfast and lunch are fine but sometimes I think, like you, I don't eat enough so I tend to snack in the afternoon time. Yes, it's hard too just for the fact you'd think that I'd have this figured out by now..but not so much...lol...

all of thes posts are very helpful and awesome.. i try to stock up on fruit, protein bars and crystal light. i tend to feel guilty now too when i snack and i dont eat enough now often. So its a struggle but im so thrilled at how far ive come and i never want to go back!
It's such a mental thing most of the time. Like I said in the orginal post that we are almost conditioned that snacks are bad for us unless we are under the age of 10. Truth is, if I go too long without eating, I either binge on snacks or I over eat at the next meal until I get sick. So, like many other things since surgery, I have to recondition myself to think differently. If I eat regularly on good things and don't let myself get too hungry, I'm fine.
The farther I get out from my surgery, the more I realize we become just like everyone else who is trying to lose/maintain their weight. We really do have the same struggles. Not fun, but a reality.
Good for the post about the vending machine because you took the time to think about it! That's half the battle is just thinking and making ourselves aware. :-)

P.S. If I haven't told you guys lately, you are such a big help to me and I appreciate each and every one of you!

I don't know, you seem to be doing pretty well. I think many would argue that incorporating snacks is healthy and a good idea, but you've always sounded like you work best when you rigidly plan meals and keep snacking to a minimum. It sounds like you plan healthy snacks and then go off plan at the last minute. It might work to avoid snacks all together for a little while and then slowly try to reintroduce the strictly healthy ones. I would guess that might help you avoid some of the cravings for the unhealthy stuff.
I tend to snack constantly all day long, and don't have that many big meals. I get nauseated if I eat any significant amount, so I just eat things like hard boiled eggs, pork rinds (0 carb), cheese, peanuts, almonds, protein shakes, leftover meats, etc. throughout the day and usually eat a small meal at dinner. I def eat junk food throughout the day though if I buy it, and that is really easy to do. This bag of Chex mix won't hurt me....
