Intestinal Spasms! Pls help!
Hi Beautiful People!
My name is Jackie! It has been a little over a year since I had gastric bypass surgery. I couldn’t be more happy/excited about my new life! I went from a size 18 at 220 pounds to a size 2 at 134 pounds! Over the past month I have however been experiencing horrific abdominal pain. I just had an endoscopy last week and my doctor believes I am suffering from intestinal spasms. I can't even explain the intensity of the pain...its right in the center of my stomach above my belly button. The waves of pain are paralyzing and have really affected my life. I've had to leave work various times, so that I could go home and lay down. I was jus prescribed a type of muscle relaxer that works on calming the intestines. I have yet to try it, but am praying it works. In the mean time i've been prescribed vikes. I just hate having to lean on narcotics.
Has anyone else suffered from this in the past or experienced similar issues? Would love to know how you are copying. This has been a rough experience! Any advice you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated.
Love,
Jackie

Yup I've had them. Was told by my surgeon its usually caused by the body over reacting to "touching" things it wasn't used to feeling.
Of course I had the 1-2-3 your down count with mine. I waited for 6 hours the third time and realized ok, this is not stopping. Well my intestine had twisted, and because I had waited to long it started to die. So had to have 18 inches on intestine removed, luckily it wasn't used anyway. But had a load of problems that were caused from the twist, including sever pancreantitis. So wasn't allowed to eat for 2.5 weeks and locked in the hospital for 3 weeks. One week was ICU has my pancreatic enzyme levels had gotten so backed up and deadly high, nomal is around 100 I was actually OFF the charts which goes to 10,000...if I remember correctly...I know I was in the thousands off the charts.
Take the muscle relaxants, it will help till your body adjusts. Pain pills will only hide the pain, not treat the problem.
On a note...that happened a year out from surgery with me....I haven't had a problem since and it has been 4 years.

What you are describing sounds like what happened to me, which was an internal hernia. This is different from a traditional hernia because there's nothing you can physically see and it's not necessarily caused by doing ultra-strenuous activities. They are caused because of the weight loss and our stomach muscles weaken a bit causing the intestine to come through the muscle walls.
The fix was an easy lap. surgery that was same-day. I haven't had a problem since and only about 3% of people who have it will have a relapse.
This may not be your problem but it would be wise to rule it out as it's nothing to mess around with. Honestly though, from what you describe it sounds like this may be your problem. My pain was horrific and it would come and go in waves but it got to the point where it lasted for 2 days straight and I made my husband take me to the ER in a blizzard. I have a surgeon in my hometown that's not my RYN surgeon (gallbladder removal) who said if I wouldn't have improved (after mega does of pain killers and laxatives and 3 days in the hospital) he would have operated on me immediately. Thankfully I did improve but was on my RNY surgeons table 2 days after being released from my hometown hospital. I ignored my pain for about 4 months and I ended up with a twisted colon along with the hernia which basically would have ended up in sepsis if it would have ruptured. Thank God it didn't.
I would call your surgeon's office as soon as you can.
Good luck!

Emily & Nicole,
Thanks so much for sharing your stories. I am so sorry that both of you had to endure such horrific events. I’ll def. make it a point to start taking the muscle relaxants soon. I loathe taking the pain pills! Emily, I did have an endoscopy which didn’t seem to reveal an internal hernia, but I do agree that the symptoms are definitely there. I’m going to follow-up with my surgeon. Hopefully he has a plan in mind. I need something that is going to prevent the stomach attacks. It’s great to have the muscle relaxers to help treat the pain, but I need something preventative. As you know, they make the world just stop. It’s extremely difficult at work to sit in your cube in horrific stomach pain! Thanks again! Jackie
