how did u choose your surgery ?
Hello all...My name is Margie and i was wondering if you could tell me how you made the decision about what type of surgery you would have...I am and have been going back and forth between a RNY and a Band..I have researched both and just cant seem to make up my mind..any input or suggestion would be appreciated...Thanks
I did the same thing! for me i did RNY, i spoke to my Dr and he felt i had way too much to loose for the band (i was 370lbs). he told me it would be great that I loose 100lbs with the band but i would still be overweight and would need to come back for RNY. being that I paid out of pocket by myself I went with RNY & i love it! I think the band is good for those who need to drop 100-130lbs but If you nee to loose over 200lbs i just dont think its worth it...but thats me. Also for me i knew i would fail on the band. i kind of like knowing that if i eat somthing i shouldnt i'll get really sick or start dumping so i stay far away from that food, with the band i would of ate my way around it! good luck, which ever one you choose is a step in the right direction!!
i talk to my doc about it i did ryn and i love it i talk to other ppl to how much weight u want to loose
yessss i go in with DR. BILOF ..... THANKS DOMINGA WWW.GARDENSTATEBARIATRICS.COM MAY GOD BE WITH ME THIS DAY AND ANY OTHER DAY IM SO HAPPY I CRY AS I WRITE THIS YESSSSSS PLS FEE FREE TO SHARE ANY AND EVERYTHING WITH ME
I was originally going to do RNY ... never even considered the band .... then I found this place and learned about other options as well. Research everything. For me the right choice was the DS due to the fact that its more malabsorption then restriction that makes you lose and that I would be encouraged to eat higher fat/proteins while jus****ching my carb intake.
Its true that there is no 1 size fits all surgery but make sure you've checked everything before you let yourself decide on one.

Thanks ladies..I have been doing tons of research, but my insurance will only cover these two options. I need to lose a little over 100 lbs...so my nut suggested either one. My surgeon however suggests RNY due to other health conditions like diabetes and pcos...I guess I know what I need to do...Im just really scared...
I never considered the band, as I know I would cheat with it eventually. I seriously considered the DS, but I only have 100lbs to lose, and it seemed like overkill. Also, the best MD in Atlanta doing the DS has only ever done 400 of them.... that scared me a lot. I picked the RNY because it has restrictive and malabsorptive properties, is covered by my insurance, and the doc I chose has done 2800+ surgeries and has awesome statistics.
As said before, there is no "right" answer... read everything you can, and focus on picking the one that will best facilitate the lifestyle you want to live, and are capable of living.
Happy reading!!!

I decided the RNY was for me because I needed restriction against sugar and fat...also I didnt want a foreign object in my body...the body can reject it and you're out the money, your stomache can hurniate over it and you ahve to ahve it removed or revised/it can slide up your stomache and you need to have it removed....oye - what looks good on a sleeping flat person - can change as you stand, walk, and are active...

NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS THIN FEELS
no one can change you but YOU!!!
I never considered RNY because of the malabsorptive properties and the long term hernia rates, etc.
When I went to my surgical consult I was pretty set on the band. I like that it was reversable, and less invasive. At my consult, my surgeon was going over my options (prior to knowing my preference) and said he would never talk a patient out of a band, but wouldn't reccomend it either. We looked at the WL % rates and the removal rates and both were high IMHO. I also want to get pregnant and he had literally just come from removing a pregnant patient's band because it had slipped and was causing complications in her pregnancy.
That left VSG (again no DS as I am not interested in malapsorbtion) which I chose and LOVE. Having had this procedure I would reccomend appealing to any insurance provider that does not cover it. Again this is my personal experience. I hope I have been of some help!

I only considered lap band because I had about 80 pounds to lose. It was the right decision for me, but everyone is different. I have had no bad experiences in the six months i've had the band, but there are people who do. I would talk to your surgeon and decide what's right for you. Having the band isn't easy, it's just a tool to use in whatever way you choose. I am still able to eat every food which can be tough, sometimes i wish that I had bad consequences like dumping that would stop me from eating certain foods. overall I am incredibly happy that I got my band. I'm 46 pounds down in 6 months, and over half-way to my goal.
