Update
First, I have to say that I have nothing but respect and awe for those of you getting surgery through insurance. All the headaches and hangups you've endured...wow.
I have been in a constant state of hurry up and wait for several weeks now.
I finally decided on Daryl Stewart in Texas. His office has not been the greatest, but I am taking a moral stance against the Dr.'s office here that was aloof. Unfortunately it's beginning to look like all of them might be that way. Anyway, i had a hard time getting information out of them, and having talked to multiple surgeons or their offices, I wanted to know some facts BEFORE I paid for the consultation. Not so easy. First, the consult was $250 each, which, for what it was, was a ripoff. My sister and I waited extra long so that we could have our consultations together (yes, she is having surgery too). We made the drive to Denton, hurried, hurried, only to wait an HOUR AND A HALF. Not happy. Plus, we had to get back, so we only had 45 minutes with the surgeon. Then we had thought the consultation fee was $200/each. Next, we learned that before we could schedule surgery, we had to have labs (of course), and an upper gi. The UGI I had no idea about, and there's another good chunk of money times two.
I was also a little bummed because I had been wanting to go with the duodenal switch, something my parents totally backed when it was just me and my sister didn't want surgery. But now that she wanted surgery and it was double the cost, it would be too pricey times two.
Luckily I got the bloodwork done quickly on Monday (although I don't think they've sent it in yet). I hate needles (I figure I'll only have a couple I'm aware of at surgery!) but it didn't hurt--bonus! Then I scheduled my upper gi and...I had to schedule it for next Tuesday! Again, not happy! I'm in a hurry up mode, don't they know! But at least I have it scheduled.
The surgeon's office had said they were scheduling for late May, but that was a week ago, and I can't even schedule until I have everything in to them. But, I called this morning, and they actually still have May 19 and May 26 open. FINGERS CROSSED that those don't get filled until my sister and I can schedule them! The office told me there is about a 24 hour turnaround on UGI. So I'm thinking maybe I can schedule next Thursday! Or at least Friday!
