I know I have to quit smoking in order to have surgery, but I always end up over eating when I quit....
Does anyone know if I can still maybe do those chew packets, that you don't have to spit? Because I don't think I will be able to not have nicotine at all.... I will become even fatter and more obese! Help!

That is definitely a question you should ask your surgeon because it may vary from dr. to dr. But, I will tell you that where I work/had surgery, the answer is no... no nicotine at all.

From what I've heard the nicotine can cause ulcers to form in your pouch after surgery which is why you're supposed to quit before your surgery and not have nicotine again after the surgery. My surgeon wouldn't perform the surgery at all if we didn't sign an agreement saying we'd quit and never smoke again, I'm not a smoker so it didn't really apply to me but still. I think that's probably the policy of almost all surgeons.

I strongly suggest the Nicotrette Inhaler.  It is what my wife used and she quit within a few weeks.  After a month or so she didn't even use that anymore.  She used to smoke about half a pack a day or so.  It really helps if you are around people who don't smoke.  If she still lived with her parents there would be no way she could have done it, they are chain smokers and go through 3-4 packs a day between them.  I can't stand the smell of smoke, I tried smoking when I was younger but hated the smell.  Now when I am at work in an elevator and a smoker walks in to go up after going out for a smoke, I will get out of the elevator and take the stairs no matter how many floors it is.

I only smoke maybe 5 cigarettes a day, sometimes I don't smoke at all in a day... But it is my stress reliever. I suppose I will need to try meditation and hard candy, that seems to work for some people that don't smoke a whole lot and try and quit. thanks for the suggestion! I appreciate that people are actually posting back to me! lol

PS- It has been two days without a smoke.

You can and should quit. I know your worried about over eating and all of that, but dont. Who cares if you gain 3 more pounds before surgery? You are about to seriously change your life, for the rest of your life. All 3 of those pounds and many many more will be gone before you even know it. This is a life changing experience, and one that you really should embrace with open arms. You have to trust and use your tool (surgery), but you also have to do your part as well. Your whole life needs an overhaul, not just the amount of food you put in your mouth, but the type, and everything else in your life that is unhealthy needs to go too.

I smoked for several months while my husband was deployed last time. I never really got addicted, but I just really liked having something/anything to do during the day to get my mind off him being gone. Now, post op, he is deployed again. I will fully admit to you that I have had days where I think "wow, I'd so love to just sit on the porch with a ciggarette today!" I don't crave the nicotine or anything, I just miss the...I guess experience, because I use to smoke with one of my friends/old neighbor. Its just the memories. Now working out is my stress reliever, and that is the best stress reliever I could have ever adopted for myself not only because it helps me loose the weight faster but because its just down right good for me where smoking is not!

I have totally changed my life and adopted a new healthy lifestyle, I am never going back not just for myself but for my family. My future children deserve a healthy mommy, and my husband deserves to have me grow old with him. Not some fat@ss who sits around smoking all day and dies of a heart attack at 50. KWIM? That is what I tell myself everytime I'm tempted to revert back to old ways with food or anything else.

You can do this, and we are all here to help you!
