Hi everyone,

lately ive been craving soda..i mean for the last 5 months (im 5 months post op and have lost 83 lbs woohoo) ive only been drinking crystial light and water and G2 so im going nuts! I dont drink coffee or tea and soda to me is like coffee to other people.. im wondering if anyone drinks soda after surgery and if so, any suggestions. I dont plan on drinking more than 4 oz just enough for a taste but i know the sugar and carbonation might be a problem. But i figure its no worst than alcohol (and people do drink after surgery) i havent yet and dont plan to for several more months but and advice or experience would be great!!

also just a wow moment today : i am a ER nurse and i use to wear 2xl pants and scrub tops and today i bought xl pants (with still room in them) and xl/large scrub tops!!! woohhoo

i love RNY...

Congrats on the new scrubs!!  That's such a big deal because they are not a forgiving material.

Anyway, about the soda.  This is the monkey wrench that was my pre-op life, I was so addicted to pop.  I always justified it by saying it was diet pop, it's still part of my water intake, can't live without it, etc.  So I went cold turkey and really haven't had much pop since.

If you know my posts, you'll know I'm not a person to say absolutely never, ever.  So if you did want to try some soda please don't do regular...there is so much sugar that you could make yourself so sick and it's just plain bad for anyone.  (Did you know Orange Crush has 72 grams of sugar in 20oz?!?!?!...no one needs that).  So try diet.  What I've found when I do have the occasional drink of pop is that it makes me burp horribly and it's like I get this weird, full feeling that's unpleasant...not painful but not pleasant...almost like it could come back up right after the first drink.  You may have this or maybe not but if I know I am going to have some pop, it has to be over ice and almost flat...which tastes like crap, so they I don't really want it anymore.  Great strategy, huh? :-)   Sometimes soda is unavoidable, literally, I went to a BBQ at someones house and it was the only thing there.  Granted, yes, water is always an option but we aren't monks...we can have some things now and again.  We just have to live and learn..it might be ok for you or it might not.

I've become more a green tea drinker now.  I'm enjoying my green tea with Truvia right now! :-)

Cheers!

~Emily~

Somebody might attack me for posting this but....I'm a little over 4 months post op.  I was addicted to soda pre op and thought it was going to be soooo terrible to give up.  Well I really never crave it...but, I have had it a few times.  Honestly, I don't care for it much anymore.  The carbonation just doesn't set well with me.  I've only had a few sips at a time.  I've only had diet...I dump horribly on sugar so, I wouldn't even bother to try it.  But, maybe go ahead and give it a taste (just a little) you might find like me you don't really like it anymore.  I have also had some alcohol as well with no problems.  ( i should say i'm talking about a few sips of a fruity drink not a whole drink!).

Probably not what you want to hear (or maybe it is), but I usually buy one or two Mexican cokes/week, and drink about half of one most days. I think many people would get sick off the sugar, but I keep the amount low. I don't think I could ever go completely without, and I might as well drink the good (non corn syrup) stuff if I am going to. I can manage the 50 or so calories it adds per day, and I think if I tried to cut them out all together I'd end up making trips to Sonic, where I would probably be downing Route 44s (which I did once - I only get dumping from extremely high fat foods, not sugar - so I gotta be careful). I kind of don't like diet drinks - except crystal light, but it gives me awful headaches. I make stevia cool-aid pretty often though :)

There's a brand of pop that I bought once from Fresh market that was made from Stevia. I honestly don't remember the brand, but it didn't taste too bad.
Also, there's a few diet pops made with Splenda these days.
But I would say my all time fav is Dr Browns- which is an all natural cane sugar soda as well.

ooh, I bet it's the Zevia. I love that stuff, but it's like $8 for a 6 pack here. I do Splenda sometimes too....but (hides) it's still a diet drink eeeh. Just in case anyone's wondering...Stevia/Truvia is awesome - it doesn't taste quite like sugar (it has sort of a minty kind of thing to it), but it also doesn't really have an aftertaste.

I crave soda really bad sometimes too.  If I really want it I buy diet and let it go flat.  The carbonation hurts me pretty bad.
