choosing your surgery

Hi Everyone.

Just thought I would check with all of my other 20-somethings to see how they decided which surgery to decide on. I am leaning toward VSG but want to know how others decided so that I am informed.

Cheers!

I decided to have the RNY cuz all the people i know who had wls with amazing results had the RNY. n the others  i know who had the band gained back all the weight or had complications.
my dr. offered the VSG, but i didnt know any one who had  it and  i wanted the malabsortion.

but the VSG sounds  a very good choise cuz of your age!! n less potential complication. if  i were better informed about the vsg i may woulda go it the VSG. but its a personal choise u need to think what would be better for you, cuz every body is diferent.

but any surgery u pick will work if you work it! this is not easy is hard work no matter  VSG, RNY, BAND or DS.
good luck!

My only options for the surgeon I had were Band or RNY.   I chose it because, honestly, the most drastic and that's what I needed.  I felt I could eat around the Band.  Lots of people do well on the Band so don't disregard that either as an option.
My surgeon also did a good job of "selling me" on an RNY.
I didn't research VSG because, like I said, it wasn't an option at the time.

I chose the DS for many reasons, but the main reason was because I needed the most malabsorption possible. I had really awful metabolism and my body holds on to every pound like it's golden. I'm almost a year out, loving my DS, and I've lost over 100 pounds with just 15 more to lose until I hit goal.

I can eat pretty much what I want and I don't have any of the nasty side effects that you sometimes hear are associated with the DS.

when i walked into my surgeons office i inteded on wanting the band because i didnt want anything super permanant like rny.

we sat down and talked, and he didnt mention anything like vsg or the sleeve, and said i had to much weight to lose to even consider the band and would never see the results i wanted.

i know a girl who was heavier then me and got the band a few months before i had my rny and see exaclty what the dr was talking about. ive lost like 168 pounds or so, and shes only lost like 70ish mabbe if that (you cant even tell she had wls.)

anyways that was my experiance and i love my rny and dont really know the diff of anything else cause it was never explained :)

good luck girl !

Thanks for the replies, Ladies!

My clinic offers RNY, LapBand and the sleeve. I guess I will have to make the call on what the surgeon says and how comfortable I am with his recommendations.

VSG on 03/24/10 with
4 years ago I was denied the LapBand by my insurance company. (Long story...) I didnt have money to self-pay,so I dropped the idea of WLS and went on with my life- got married, etc.

Last fall, my parents approached me with an offer to pay for my lap band if I wanted to do it. They didnt have the money 4 years ago, but they have it now, and they wanted me to have the chance.

I had NO INTENTION of doing anything other than the band. Too scary!! But when I looked into the surgical weight loss program here in my city, I discovered the sleeve. My original surgeon told me that if she could convince the insurance companies to approve the sleeve, she would stop doing bands and RNY altogether and reccommend sleeves for everyone. She said the option to convert to DS makes it perfect for everyone- from the lightweights to the heaviest of patients. When I heard that I was sold. She made me feel very confident that the sleeve is my very best option.

I have switched surgeons now and will be having the sleeve in Mexico in 12 days.

That being said, I know someone who lost 200 lbs with the band. (She was also hospitalized twice, and almost died from band erosion into her stomach, but from what I understand, that was kind of her own fault. It was overtightened and would not have it adjusted despite her dr saying she needed to for several months.) Then I know someone who had the RNY and only lost 70 lbs- without any complications. So it goes to show that no surgery is better than any other- just more right for you.

I am obviously very pro-sleeve, but I think you will be able to narrow down what is best for you very easily by following your heart and discussing it with a surgeon.

I was a hundred percent sold on getting the band when I originally went to see my surgeon, but he basically told me the exact same thing as everyone else apparently, that with the band I might not lose the weight I need to and that he thought I should get the sleeve. So I went away and did all my research and decided he was probbaly right, vsg would help me lose all the weight without any malabsorption (it also helped that he refused to to the d/s and the rny on me), and a pretty low risk of complications. But you should pick what's right for you poppet.

I have to say that like some of the above posters.  I thought I wanted the band as well!  But after speaking with 3 different sergeons before picking one, they all 3 "sold me on the RNY"  It was the best option for me.  I have been over weight all my life, since I was about 3 years old, I was big.  Thats all I've ever know is to comfort myself with food.  After I lost my mom 5 years ago (Who was also very over weight.) I gained 60 MORE pounds.  After seeking councling, and findout and accepting my issue with food, I lost 40 pounds on my own, (Which brought me to 280) and thats what I weighted when I started my weight loss journey!

RNY was the best option for me, as I NEED the restriction!!!  Hope my story helps a little bit, and I do wish you all the best in making you WLS decision!  :-)

XOXO,
Jess

When I went to my Dr's seminar I was sold on the RNY.  Then I got to thinking about how it was permanent and I was young... I decided on the band.  I know I have a sweet tooth, but I can control it.  What I can't control are portions, and that's what the band does for me without the malabsorption complications.  Now I'm only 2 weeks out, but I'm very happy with my decision.  I know I won't lose as fast as those with the other surgeries, but I know I will still lose.

I think that no matter what surgery you have it's still up to you whether or not you'll succeed.  You are still deciding what you're putting in your mouth, when you're going to the gym, etc.

Good luck with your decision.. no matter what you decide, I'm rooting for YOU!
