new post-op with questions...

Hey everyone...
I am a new post-op and had a couple of questions.
I had surgery on the 9th and when I was released from the hospital I was told 70 grams of protein a day and 64 oz of water a day. In out informational "bible" we are told to take in 1 ounce every 15 to 30 minutes while awake.

Am I really supposed to be able to get all of this down?? Or are these just things to strive for, so I have some sort of goal. I had half of a shake this morning and started to feel full so I put it away in the fridge...

That is another thing... I don't really know when I am full. I haven't gotten to a nauseous feeling but it gets more uncomfortable to swallow liquid. Is that considered full?? I am sorry to be a bother but I am feeling kinda of lost. I have a friend that had surgery by a different doctor the same day and said she is having no problem getting down the water for the day. Is is possible my pouch is smaller??

Thanks for any response. Any ideas or suggestions are welcome.

Nathalie :)

Thank you for the help. I will just use the numbers as a guideline for me to strive to get and not get bent out of shape if I can't get there. I know this road is a long a bumpy one...

 Hi Nathalie!

You are not a bother at all!  You are new to this (I still consider myself new too at some things) so of course not everything is going to make sense.

There's no way you could possibly get all those oz down in a day, so that would be your goal for what you would eventually want to do.  I remember not knowing when I was full either but I was never really hungry to begin with.  Even though you may not be hungry, you still need to eat and drink so you don't get dehydrated or malnourished.  However, do  not force yourself to eat if you feel pain or nausea, that's your body telling you it's had enough for the moment and to try again later.  Don't worry, it's basically impossible to stretch your pouch out at this point on the amount of liquids you are consuming..so no harm has been done to your insides, you'll just feel crappy.

I really don't think two pouches are the same size wise (in the same ball park sure, but it's almost impossible for everyone to have the same dimensions each and every time) and people will react to food/water differently. Your friend just may be able to tolerate a little better than you at this point.  No worries, as long as you are getting some water and protein, all is good!

Good luck!!

~Emily~

Thank you for all of the support and advice. I really appreciate it. I was just kinda overwhelmed by it all and didn't know how I could get all of it down. I am sure this will get better with time and practice...

Nathalie thank you so much for posting this. We had surgery the same day. I was released on 11th. I have been going through the thing. I am trying to get down the liquids. I do try to get those proteins in most importantly though.

Thanks. I am doing a little better on all of the fluids. The first day I just couldn't get the fluids in but the next day was a lot better.
