1 year =) *edited w/ PICS!*
Hey everyone! I haven't been around in quite a while...there are soo many new faces and new people hanging out on the losers bench! that is awesome =)
Well I decided to make it a point to come on here and share with you all today on my 1 year surgiversary! This time last year all 236 lbs of me was getting prep'd for the surgery that would change my life forever!
Just some background for those of you who don't know who i am and have not taken a lil trip over to my profile ( btw please do! and add me as a friend)
My name is Blanca, I'm 27 yrs old (26 at time of surgery) and I am only 4'11 1/2 ( i hang on to that half for dear life lol) I started with a BMI of 47 and had already begun dealing with high blood pressure and had diabetes looming over my head like a time bomb just waiting to explode by the time i got the nerve to have WLS!
Choosing WLS was a hard decision to make, and i kept hearing you're not "big enough" to have gastric bypass from friends and even some family, i have to tell you, if you haven't dealt with that yourself...that is the worse thing u can say to someone who has decided to do something as drastic as have gastric bypass. The person saying it might see it as giving a compliment but i just saw it as being told, hey your fat but just not fat enough. Don't ever second guess yourself and your choices based on the words from someone who has never ever walked a day in your shoes!!
One of the main reasons i finally decided to have WLS was because i was determined to be able to have a child one day. I had been diagnosed with PCOS at 21 when my period completely stopped (didn't have one for 3 years!)
I was told by more then one Dr that i would not be able to have kids w/out some kind of medical intervention and even then there was no guarantee.
That news was very discouraging and put me into a depression that no one could get me out of, at the time i was with a guy who was an only child and i became so depressed at the thought that I would be the sole reason he would never be a dad and the reason his parents would never be grandparents...well that relationship didn't survive my depression and I just got heavier.
I wanted to share that part of my story mainly because here i sit on my 1 year surgiversay 5lbs from my personal goal and pregnant!! No medical intervention...just a blessing!
Now ladies i do NOT recommend getting preggo so early out of surgery BUT it happens and it can be a wonderful thing! For those of you who chose WLS as a means to one day become a mom...IT CAN HAPPEN!!
My period regulated the very day of surgery and was clockwork every month after.
Believe your doctors when they say to double up on the contraceptive!! lol Yes you can become a "fertile Myrtle" even if you have had fertility issues in the past!!
This pregnancy lit a fire under my butt when it came to my vitamins...its very easy to skip a day or two or 3 the further u get out...but they really are crucial and there's nothing like a baby sucking what little nutrients you have from your body to remind you of that!!
So to those of you just starting your WLS journey...the possibilities really are endless for you!
This is probably the hardest/toughest thing you will ever go through...it has its UPS and my goodness does it have its DOWNS, but i swear to you, YOU will get through them! I would have this surgery every year if that's what it took to live the life I'm living now.
Id take the puking the shakes the passing out and the feeling that you will never ever be normal again (yes these things can happen) simply for the feeling you have the day u wake up and don't recognize yourself in the mirror, the feeling u get when u run into an old friend who does a triple take before they realize its YOU! For the day you walk into your favorite "plus size" store and have to walk right out cause everything is too big for once! The day you see your collar bone..etc etc etc!!
My most memorable moment was the day i walked out of the shower and wrapped a towel around myself and there was NO gap...it went all the way around...i cried for 10 minutes straight and then called my mom and we cried together. (ahh I'm tearing up now)
And then of course the day u see something u NEVER expected to see, like a POSITIVE on a pregnancy test when you were told it would never happen!!
Good luck to you all and although i haven't been on this board as regularly as i should be i am STILL on OH almost everyday...if you ever have questions, need a little boost of encouragement please don't hesitate to leave me a message!
WLS gave me my life back...and life is good!!
and finally the proof is in the pics...enjoy =)

Blanca~
Congrats on such a wonderful and inspiring 1st year journey! You have done amazing!
I, too, was pregnant at the 1 year mark. I conceived my daughter (completely by surprise/while on birth control) at 7 mos post-op. I was told for so long before I had my RNY that I would never have a child because of my weight and my PCOS and to hear I was pregnant was such a miracle and a blessing. I had my 2nd baby at just over 4 years post-op (conceived at 3 1/2 years post-op). My "babies" are now 4 years old and 16 mos old and they continue to amaze me and bless my life daily! I think having my RNY was, by far, the best decision I ever made in my life!
Your "after" pic is smokin'! Can't wait to see the pics of your beautiful baby when he/she is born =)
