HI Everyone,
I'm 3 months out post op and of course forgot to ask the doctor when i will be able to have an alcoholic beverage. I rarely drink but it would be nice every now and then to have a drink. I believe when i was going through all pre op appts they mentioned 6 months to a 1 year without alcohol. However, I know of a few people who have had surgery who have had a alcoholic drink after 1-2 months. Im just curious, my plan was to wait until i was 10 months out anyways.. When did you start having an alcoholic beverage again? I heard you get drunk quickly ... is that true? Can you even finish a whole beer?

I would double check with the doctor on their policy for alchohol. Mine said nothing until a year out... I waited a year and a half. Yes, the drink**** me faster. In the beginning, one was enough for the rest of the night but as the body adjusts (just like with food) the amount I can drink has increased. Many opinions regarding beer. I, on the other hand, enjoy my Dos XX. So, I can drink a whole beer. Just check with your doctor on time frames.
Good Luck!

The more things the change, the more they're still the same.
I had my first drink 4 months out, which happened to be my birthday. I had pretty close to the same tolerance as before surgery, but then I had the sleeve which is supposed to effect it less. One thing I will say is to be sure you get enough water in earlier in the day and to eat well that day to decrease the effects. Also, carbonation isn't allowed after surgery so things like beer and champagne are out because they can damage your pouch.
I'm no alcholic, but I started drinking again about 6 weeks out. I had VSG. Pretty much all I drink now is wine. No carbonation! Make sure you stay away from that. It will stretch your stomach out. On a good night, I can drink about 6 glasses of wine. I did a shot at New Years and I swallowed it fine. I would check with your doctor or dietician to make sure they feel it's okay to drink.
Hey I just had a VSG and I am very percial to a good night out. How often do you drink? Do you think that because of the drink it slows the weight loss down at all? Oh and I only drink vodka- it used to be vodka and lemonade but obv no carbonation now do you have any suggestions for a juice that isn't orange juice to go with it at all? lol
i had my first drink 3 months out. but all i've had is wine. and just a small glass. i think i've drank it a total of three times, but it never bothered me and sometimes its nice to know that i can have a glass. but as for liquor and beer, i was told i could never have beer again. and i think the liquor would bother my stomach too much. but definately ask you doctor before you do anything!
I think I was about 16 mos out before I had a glass of wine. I still don't really drink at all... very, very rarely and maybe 1/2 a glass. Alcohol is very hard on my stomach. I'm not the norm, though, and I know many people who, though they get drunk quicker, don't have an issue with it. Good luck!
