I am so mad!!! I was 30 pounds away from what I think I want my goal to be and decided it was time to start birth control so I started getting the shot depo provera. Well what my doctor didnt tell me is a major side effect is weight gain. I luckely have not gained any weight but I have not lost anymore either which is so frustrating since I passed my one year in October and was really hopping to be to goal or where I wanted to be! Has anyone else been on the shot or know how long it will take to get out of my system so I can start loosing again I am due this week but getting off of it. Any help would be great thanks a ton!

I don't take depo but it's a good thing you haven't gained any weight either.  Too, after a year is when the weight loss really slows down/stops anyway so it might be timing in addition to the shot that is causing that.

Good luck, I hope that it all works out!

I've been on Depo since right after I had my surgery done. When I was researching it and from what I found out from my Dr., only 30% of people that take it gain weight, and the weight gain is because it makes you want to snack and graze more often, not because it actually does something to make you physically gain weight. If the grazing and snacking is really becoming a noticeable problem for you then switch back to another form of birth control, but I would say, if you haven't noticed a major increase in snacking then the shot probably isn't effecting your weight loss.

A major side effect of depo is not weight gain... as with all birth control it is a possible side effect. The majority of people who take it do not experience weight gain... some that do experience it is a small amount over a longer period of time and they are now accounting it more towards lifestyle changes then to the drug itself. Its hard to say how long it will take to get out of your system - when you are losing weight you are typically having a spike in hormones so it may be quicker then if normal.

Always keep an eye with any birth control you take.. as well as other medications!!

I had been on the shot for over a year before I had my surgery so I don't notice a difference. I have had no problem loosing weight while on the shot. As far as how long it takes to get out of your system... it could take up to nine months. That is what they told me at the clinic. Hope things get better!

Everyone is different, but I was like you - I got depo and BAM stopped losing (it also made me an emotional wreck).  I got off of depo after 3 months (and started losing again shortly thereafter), and got (and still have) an IUD.  I have mirena and have absolutely no complaints about it.  I don't have to think about it, it's there for 5 years, and the hormones are all where they are needed so I don't have to worry about them going through my system and messing up my weight or my emotional status.  I hope this helps.
