1) the actual surgery As long as you do everything your dr asks of you pre-op you will be fine during surgery. Take what he says very seriously to prepare you, and try not to take any short cuts or have any cheating. (i know some people have hiccups but im just trying to be real, and truthful.) Prepare yourself that you wil be in pain afterwards, and have strict instructions after the procedure that you will need to follow. Its nothing to be nervous or scared about. you are taking the next steps to a healthier you. its just going to take some patience, strength, willingness to except the new positive changes in your life.
2) how I'll feel towards myself once I've had the surgery. Did any of you ever feel like you might lose who you were if you had the surgery?
i feel more positive now towards myself then ever before. i dont think ive ever felt like i may lose who i am from the past, i now am just a stronger, more confident me. ive stopped hiding behind my weight and started living a life like when i was younger with no fear. im not saying its easy to adjust. the past 9 months for me have been a big clusterf*ck dont get me wrong, and its a huge adjustment to yourself and the people close around you, but its a personal growth experiance, so hang on and enjoy the ride girl!
<3 i cant wait to hear your fully approved!! <3 am

Welcome!
Surgery is a scary thought. I just had my 4th surgery to repair a hernia, scar tissue and twisted colon (fun huh?) and I was still scared. My RNY was laproscopic so I was uncomfortable for about a week and then I started to feel more like myself. It's actually a good thing to be nervous, because it is major surgery but the risks are pretty low and the pay off is very high.
I didn't have any identity problem after surgery though I know others sometimes do struggle with that. If you have a good, solid foundation of who you are and a strong sense of your morals and beliefs than you won't lose any of that just because you lost weight. You might lose low self esteem and self worth but that's a good thing! My husband has noticed my new found ability to stand up for myself a lot better since surgery and he's pretty proud of that. I think surgery helped me find my voice, so to speak.
Good luck to you and good luck on your approval. You'll do great!

Hiya~!!
1. The surgery ~ I was absolutely positively terrified. About 3-4 days before surgery I seriously started spamming posts in the DS forums because I needed people who had survived the surgery to tell me it was ok. As it turned out, the strong antibiotics the doctor made me take the night before surgery kept me up sick the whole night AND we left at 2:30 am for the hospital because it was a long drive . . . honestly by the time we got their I was to tired to care.
The key that the post ops gave me to keeping sane: Think about whats most likely to happen [aka you wake up, spend a while ouchies, get better and start your journey]. This is what your expecting anyways so just make yourself remember the most likely outcome.
2. I'm almost 3 weeks post op. I'm not worried about losing myself, however I'm terrified that I can't change my views. With my surgery you don't absorb 50% of the protein you eat and you don't absorb 80% of the fats you eat so food is a MUST and you have to try to get in up to 100g of protein a day [well 30 first month 60 second month, etc] as well as religiously taking supplements. I feel full after eating though and I go into the "oh my god I'm failing at dieting" mindset at the full feeling. You can easily keep who you are, however its much harder to change your views on eating and food then it is to keep your personality.
Good luck~! And btw what surgery are you looking into getting?
