Wii or a treadmill???

I am wanting to purchase something that I can do at home after my RNY surgery, and not have to join a gym (I have ALWAYS hated going to the gym, with all those skinny and muscular people).

What you you Post-opt people think?  (Between a Wii fit or a treadmill!)

I want both, but with paying my deductible for surgery, I think I can swing one or the other.

Maybe later on I will purchase the other one, but:   Whats a better work out, that I won't get board of?

Thanks in advance!!!

I think both are a good idea, but I know how the whole cash-flow thing goes as well. I would suggest you start off on a treadmill. Walking is something you will be able to do immediately after surgery, and a good cardio workout is essential for burning fat.

In addition, you would like the Wii Fit Plus for it's ability to help strengthen core muscles and keep you flexible. But, you may not be able to do some of the Wii Fit's excercises directly after surgery. A lot of the games require good range of motion. Lean muscle stregnth will also help keep your metabolism high and help you lose weight.

I would go with the treadmill first, keep up with that, and then grab a Wii. By the time you're ready for the Wii, you'll be bored with the treadmill, and the Wii Fit games are a blast to play.

Good Luck!!!

Okay i have both of these things and this is my opinion: I love the treadmil because i always feel like i get a REAL hardcore workout off of it... i always feel good getting off the treadmill.  I also, love my wii fit because it gives me a break from the boring everyday same thing run, However, i dont feel like i get the awesome workout from the wii. I really like the Yoga on the wii fit and its awesome because i dont have to pay for a yoga class at the gym. So i think if you want to get a better work out i would go with the treadmill and then once you get more comfortable with your body and the "gym" idea maybe take a class like yoga or Zumba to break up your workout routine :) good luck with whatever you decide! :)

I have a Wii with the Wii Fit game Its actually kinda cool and it tracks your progress and gives you motivationals boosts hear n there. I have gym membership and could use a treadmill there. As for me I get bored of the treadmill or any cardio machine hahah. So I switch it up so I dont get bored of them. But I suggest that you go with the Wii system reason being is that there is sooo many fitness games out there for the system that I dont think you will go bored. Wish you the best.

Take care,

Robbie =)

I was contemplating the same thing about a month ago. I chose to get the eliptical though. My aunt has a treadmill it is really good workout too. She lets me stop in whenever so I bought my eliptical. Good luck with your choice I think I might get a WII later though.

I honestly like variety which is why I would choose Wii. I have the attention spand of the a four year old. Although I do like a treadmill, I honestly would rather just go outside and walk. Plus thats free that way. And you can always get a trial membership and go to different gyms. Most of the time its free plus again you are getting variety. But personally never cared for a gym, other than just to say I was going to one. LOL.

Honestly, I would do a treadmill.  I have a wii fit and while it is very fun, I just don't get a workout like I would on a treadmill where you can walk/jog/run with resistance and incline.

Just a word about the gym.  I felt the same way too and I took a leap of faith going to my first spinning class weighing 246lbs.  Honestly, those skinny, muscular ladies have been the most supportive, encouraging people I've ever met.  So don't totally ax the idea, the gym can be a very good choice..especially if you need to change your routine up or need access to good equipment or a trainer.

Just my opinion, good luck!!

Long term you're probably going to have to do the gym thing - no single machine or exercise is going to be enough. Your body adapts to any exercise that's repeated day after day - part of the reason behind the infamous "stalls". Just to echo what Emily said, most gyms are filled with far more supportive people then you realize. Especially now with the new year still being fresh, there are many, many people just like you there.

You'll probably eventually actually want to go to the gym - so I wouldn't go for the treadmill. The Wii will work out either way, and there's other stuff besides Wii Fit like DDR that can also be a fun workout.
