Hey everyone,
My name is Michelle. I'm a 24 yr old nurse in MA about to have lapband surgery 1/4/10 :) yayyyy. I just wanted to say hi to my fellow young people on this board. Also, i was wondering how everyone is doing with excess skin after losing all the weight, particularly with the lap band since it comes off slower. I just wanted to get some perspective from young people since I would think the problem wouldnt be so bad with skin that is more elastic.
thanks,
michelle

Hi Michelle!  Welcome to the board and a big thank you to you on being a nurse.  My husband works in Radiology so I know how invaluble you guys are to make things work in a hospital!

I had an RNY but my skin isn't that bad.  I have a little bit on my arms but weights have really helped that.  My stomach is ok but I've had a baby.  My upper thighs leave a little to be desired but I do a lot of abductor weight training there also. My butts a little saggy too but my husband and God are the only ones that see that.   So if I could get any plastic surgery done right now it would be my arms, legs, stomach and breasts (larger! I went from a D cup to a barely A cup..sad) in that order.  I'm not stressing about it though because I still feel good without the weight on me.  Maybe one day when $$ isn't so much of a factor.

Good luck on your surgery!

~Emily~

thanks so much for the kind words. Hopefully losing some weight will help me be a better nurse. It stinks being a cardiac nurse trying to teach people how to live a healthy lifestyle while I am definately no role model for that. That was good to know that you are not having a big issue with the skin. I'm not a fan of surgery hahaha so I would like to not need plastic surgery in a few years....if i do...oh well i guess huh. Thanks for the encouragement.

i know because your young you are concerned with this now, as i was too. I had my surgery 2/2/09!!  I posted this same topic!!  I had RNY and I have lost 140lbs.  I went from 330-190(currently) still losing, and now im pregnant to boot.  but, the good news is....you honestly wont care that much about it, everyone is different, it depends on how you lost and gained, where you carry it where you lose it from how much you work out post and pre op. basically what im saying is focus on being healthy and less on your looks.  remember that this is a tool and you have to work it everyday.  You will be thrilled with the results regardless!!

oh believe me, looks are the least important reason i am doing this. I just would not be very happy about having more surgery. I mean, I am sure I will look better thinner with some extra skin than I do now anyways :) Thanks for the advice!

I had RNY so the weight's coming off faster than I guess yours will, but I have lots of excess skin even with about 50 more pounds left to lose!  I think that's because even though I'm just 28, I've been fat since I was about 8.  So that's 20 years of skin stretching, and even with the greater elasticity it will only snap back so much, you know?

Having RNY was probably the best thing I've ever done for myself.

Approx highest weight: ~350. Highest measured weight: 338. Surgery weight: 297. Lowest weight (for 5 minutes): 169. Current weight: 209. Goal weight: ??? - maybe 180-185, which was my maintenance weight before the regain.

michelle,

i lost 50 lbs with my band before having it switched to a sleeve, then lost 30 more lbs. i'm thirteen months out from the first surgery, and i have loose, saggy skin on my arms, breasts, back, stomach and thighs. my arms bother me least- with exercise, they look okay and i'm not self conscious. my breasts have hardly any fat left in them, which makes them look and feel really weird when trying to put bras on. my stomach is by far my worst- i was obese my whole life, and now my panni hangs down and makes a big flap of skin. it smells, itches, and it makes me very self conscious when people touch me anywhere near it. everything else has been very managable
As someone told me lately, everyone deserves the chance to fly!
