Mirena IUD Question
Hey guys,
I know that this has been posted before but I have a question. I am going to be getting the Mirena IUD and I am still preop. I was just wondering if everyone waited until they were post op to get Mirena or did some of you have it before you had surgery? I was told by my obgyn that it is ok to have the Mirena before surgery since the hormones are so low that it won't increase the risk for blood clots like the pill could. But I haven't actually talked with the surgeon yet and they are calling me for the appointment for the IUD. I just don't know if I should wait or just get it now. Plus after this pack of pills I am out of them and dont have refills...
So what do you guys think?
Nathalie :)

Hey Nathalie!
I had my Mirena about 2 years when I had my RNY back in March, I kept it in and everything went off without a hitch. I've still got it and will be having my TT in 2 weeks and I'll keep it then too. I would ask your surgeon still though, I've heard of some women who had theirs removed prior to surgery.
Thanks for the input. I will definitely ask the surgeon to make sure it doesn't contradict how he feels. I would hate to get it in and then take it out and then put it back in again.

Thanks for the response. The ob said that the hormones are so low that there isn't more of a risk than there would be otherwise. I am pretty sure I am going to go for it. Although I can say that I am a bit nervous about it.

I had mine placed about a month and a half before surgery and had no problems. I've never had children before so the obgyn gave me a pill called cytotech to take the 2 nights prior to placement to help dilate the cervix. They also made sure that I would be in the middle of my period when they would be inserting the IUD. The obgyn said that the cytotech and being on my period made the insertion process A LOT easier for them. There was quite a bit of cramping for me for the first 4-5 hours or so... but absolutly no complains since!
Thanks for the response. I am glad you didnt have any complications and that it wasn't too painfull.
