Birth Control
Hi there,
I am 23 and am in my two week pre-op diet, getting banded on November 20th. I am currently on depo and I am just wondering if anyone has changed bc methods after surgery. If there is anyone out there that is on depo and is post-op do you still love it?
I do not have emotional, depression, negative side affects from depo, except that I gained weight when I started taking it. I think that I would like to continue with the shot because it is so easy for me, but I am worried that maybe it will keep up my weight? Silly thought...
Any advice out there?

There have been a lot of people that have changed bc methods after surgery. I haven't really heard to much about the depo shot so I'm not sure about that. I know a lot of surgeons prefer an IUD or the nuva ring but I think its should be up to you on which one you choose. I used the nuva ring prior to surgery and still use it with no problems. Hope that helps and btw congrats and good luck on your up coming surgery! you will rock that band I'm sure :)
Hey, I was on an oral BC before surgery and I ended up switching to Depo because I was having issues with getting sick because of vitamins and I would end up throwing up my pill also. Since starting on Depo i have absolutely loved it! I really don't think weight gain would be a possibility with surgery but you never know. I didn't have a problem at all and I am definitely very much a fan of the shot! Its working great and I have no complaints at all!
I started the NuvaRing after I had my surgery and I loved it...until about 3 weeks ago. I don't know what my body is thinking, but I've been bleeding for 3 weeks straight since I put in my new ring and I'm about to lose my mind. I have an appointment next month to discuss Mirena, but I've also been looking into the Depo so I'm curious to see what people have to say about it on here!
Over the past 6 1/2 years I've tried the Depo shot, Seasonale, and the Mirena IUD. The Mirena IUD is by far my favorite. The insertion came with a lot of pain, but it was worth it.
I've heard that it's not the Depo itself that causes weight gain, but it does increase your appetite which can lead to weight gain. I was aware of this when I started Depo and worked hard to keep from gaining weight. I actually ended up losing weight while on the Depo.
The Mirena IUD is fabulous because it's good for up to 5 years. It's one less pill we have to worry about taking. We all know we have enough to take already.
Best wishes in your contraceptive decision making! GOOD LUCK on your weight loss journey!!! = )

I was on oral BC and I switched to Mirena IUD. I read that a lot of WLS patients can't take oral contraception because of stomach absorption issues. There hasnt really been a lot of science to back this up, but if you read around.. it's definitely a problem.
I *love* my Mirena IUD because I also don't have periods. It felt a bit weird in the beginning but my insertion didnt really hurt that much and everything was fine & settled afer a few weeks.
I definitely recommend it- it's something that they just put in & take it out 5yrs later! I love not having to worry about BC, like, EVER! At least not for the next 5yrs...

My vote is def for an iud!!
I was on the ring for a couple of years... and looove it! Sometimes my period was still irregular...
I have the copper iud, and love that i just forget about it! Insertion was miserable... but that went away quickly! And, i don't have to pay the $40 a month i did for the ring, after insurance!!
Good luck!!
