I am 3 weeks away (Nov. 3rd) from my RNY Surgery and i am freaking anxious.

For the past week, i have been coming to OH every few hours in hopes that i will find something new to better prepare me for whats ahead of me.

I'm not sure if we can call it "cold feet" since i am 100% positive that this is the BEST choice i have ever made but arrgg... there is just this feeling of "OMG, it's really going to happen". Suddenly, i have started to take everything into thought maybe it's because i've never had surgery before.

I havent started on a liquid diet yet but i believe i will start on the 19th (two weeks pre-op) or should i start now (at 3 wks pre-op).

Is there anything i should know before surgery?

BTW: I cant wait to be on the Loser's Bench!

What you are feeling is completely normal and healthy!  If you had no fears or worries what so ever that would make me question your decision a little bit.   My RNY was my third surgery and every one of them has scared me because, after all, it's surgery!

I don't know if everyone's experience is the same but I can tell you a little about what went on the day of my surgery, just so you might know what to expect.  We came in around 9am that morning.  They took me to a regular looking doctor's office room, took my blood pressure, temp, weight, etc...normal stuff.   We sat there for what seemed like ever, then the anethesiologist came down and talked to us about what he was going to do.  That calmed my fears a lot.  I had to pee in a cup to make sure I wasn't pregnant.  A pastor came in and said a prayer with me and gave me a thumb print clay stone that has the word "Courage" painted on it...I still treasure that today.  We also had some admin people come in to talk to us about hospital stuff..lots of people were in and out. Then the nurse gave me some relaxer through a shot (I requested that).  About 2 hours from when we came it, they put me in a wheel chair and we went upstairs to the OR.  It's very much like what you would see on tv, very stainless steel, clean, cold.  I hopped up on the bed and one of the surgical people was talking to me.  The next thing I remember I was in the recovery room.  That's the bonus of surgery, you won't even know anything happened.

Good luck to you, you'll do just great!!

I was freaking out in the hotel room the morning of my surgery. Looking back, it's still hard to believe that I was able to go through with it. I guess that's how much I knew I needed it, although that didn't stop me from feeling incredibly anxious and scared. I actually came to OH that morning so that I would sort of feel "reassured" that it was the right thing.

We got to the hospital at 6AM. The prep nurses took me into a big pre-op room with lots of beds but no one else in there. They had me shave the hair off my stomach (which I know you won't have to do lol ) and then got two IVs going. They also give you something to calm you down if you want it. A little while later, the doctor showed up and the nurses wheeled me into the OR which was down the hall. I had to move over to an OR bed. Then the last thing I remember is one of my surgeon's assistants or something talking to me, going "Hi, you won't remember this, but I'll be working with Dr. Pleatman today." I think her name was Stephanie, but my memory is blurry since it's the last thing I remember.

Hi libguy -
I also am considering Dr. Pleatman for my sleeve - can't tell you how I hate the "morning of..."  - the sleeve doesn't scare me - its that darn morning, IV's, and the anxiety of the countdown.

However, I'm happy to feel that he's an experienced surgeon with a nice staff.  Anything you can offer or extend on would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
