Important question...which surgery to pick???
Hi all!!
I am sure you all love seeing my face and all of my kazillion question I have, but how else am I to learn if I don't ask, seek, and knock??
So I basically have my mind set up for the RNY, but I came across somebody who had the DS. I have done some research both, but I am just wondering what surgey you all have and what you would recommend me. I know that its a personal choice, and no one should tell me what to get, but I need suggestions... here are some things about me to help out with your answers....
I am 23 and 284 pounds
Been trying to have kids for 1 1/2 yrs with my husband
Haven't been diagnosed with PCOS, but my cycles are ALL MESSED UP since I gained my last 50 lbs
High blood pressure (thanks mama and daddy!!)
back problems
asthma
One thing I have noticed while reading lots of posts is that some DSers can be kinda mean! Sorry to say that, and please don't take it personal, but I am just wondering why that is? Anyway! Help from both sides would be LOVELY! Thanks!!!

I have answered this ? in the past had had my head chopped off...lol Ima stick my head in again tho..here it is.
I decided on the RNY because ,I thought the side effects were livable and manageable. I also trust my surgeon ,as we made the decision together.I was uncomfortable with the probable xtra malabsorption. And I was downright more comfortable with the RNY.
If you take away the asthma and put bad knees in its place we are pretty similar.
oh and I do have 2 kids, but that was no easy feat.
good luck on your decision and I hope some of this helps

Tia, I hope you didn't get your head chopped off on this board! We are pretty good, in my opinion, about letting people have their own choices and opinions. Sorry that happened to you.
The surgery picking question is always a hard one but inevitably, it's one that has to be made by the person getting the surgery. From your research, what surgery do you think best matches up with your expectations and what surgery can you live with the rest of your life? I had the choice of either RNY or Lap Band. Long story short, I chose RNY because I knew for me that I would eat around the band more so than the RNY. I am a binge/compulsive eater (something I struggle with every day) so I needed the extra restriction and malabsorption that the RNY will give me. There are people who succeed and fail at every surgery, it's sometimes I think not so much what surgery you get but can you follow through with the plan the rest of your life.
Good luck with your choice, you'll figure out what's right for you!

Hello hello. I think we are somewhat the same size unless you're a lot taller than me (which is entirely possible as I am short. 5'4") I'm 25, 280 lbs. I have PCOS, depression, GERD, I get bursitis in my hips, and I also deal with swelling and neuropathies. Truthfully, I chose my surgery center first as I knew my insurance would cover it and I was very confident in the program. I then had the choice of the Lap Band or the RNY. My apprehension with the Lap-Band is that it requires so much post-op maintenance. My surgeon is a good 2 hours away so a 4 hour round trip drive to get a fill was not appealing. Plus, as we are so young I was worried about putting a foreign object into my body as they do wear out and may need to be replaced. Not to mention that your body may reject it entirely. So obviously after I rejected the Lap-Band I had to go for the RNY but I am completely comfortable with my decision. My understanding is that with the sleeve there are no real malabsorption issues, no dumping, and the pouch/sleeve is larger than in the RNY. I think that the dumping and the small pouch and even the malabsorption will cause me to be much more vigilant after surgery in taking care of myself. If I don't I'll probably get sick, simple as that. You learn really quickly after getting sick what not to do again. I've heard some sleeve people say that the sleeve is the newer, better version of the RNY and I think they say that because they get some of the good without all of the bad. But as I've stated, I think the "bad" will actually hold me more accountable in the long run. Anyway, all the other posters were right, only you can make this decision for yourself. All I can advise is to do a lot of research and read up on all the different forums to see the pros and cons people are experiencing with their respective surgeries. Good luck to you in your decision!
