So I am confused on whether to have band or bypass? What is the weekly abg weight loss of someone with the band. I know u have to work harder with the band...which I kinda like. But I'm still confused. What do u think. Any thoughts will be helpful!! Love u guys! Mwah!

my dr told me i had too much weight to lose to get the band. i was 350 pounds at my consultation appointment, and im 5'10 with a bmi of like 50+.

at first i didnt want anything permanent. i wanted to be able to get the tool out if i wanted. i was skeptic of having my guts rearranged.

now? im glad i went thru with r n y. now after almost 6 months ive lost 116 pounds. i know a girl who got her lapband a few months before my surgery and she hasnt even lost that much shes down like 80 and had her surgery in jan (and she weighed 350 also.) to me, she was a good example of my dr's point.

something else you need to think about before any of these surgeries is , are you willing to change for the rest of your life? are you ready to commit to an exercise regime? do you have a support system? .... just some things to think about. ive been seeing a lot of posts here lately of early out post-ops that didnt think of any of these things, and being like omg is it time to change my mind!?...

good luck! and upate us on your progress with your dr and whatnot :)

Yeah I understand. One of the main reasons I even considered the band was because u don't have malabsorption. Which means u get all of the nutrients from the food u eat.So when u get pregnant not only can they remove the saline from the pouch so u can eat a lil more for u and the baby. But the baby will get all the proper nutrients from the food. Instead of fighting over the small amount of nutrients that u may or may not get with rny. This was what concerned me.I have also seen that with lap band u lose a lot slower therefore u have more of a chance to work on muscle mass so not as much lose skin. I am 293 and I need to lose about 140. I'm still not sure!!

From the research I've done when you get pregnant after RNY the baby will get the nutrients before you so no worries on you and the baby fighting over nutrients.

hi girl. i  would not be worry about the total weight loss, you can lose all the weight with both of the surgery  is the after care that u have to be councious about.
as u know RNY has the absortion problem and you have to be real comited after surgery to  watch yuor vits very carefuly. the band also needs lot of work and take care as Well, but is easier to reverse if you have some trouble. there a lot of thing that you have to thing about before taking a decition, you know your body and no body can help you to choose one you have to think about it very carefulyl.
I`m a RNYèr and I love it!! it was my personal chooise. cuz i knew since the begining that i wasn`t gonna feel confortable with the band for personal resons.
but BOTH surgeries works and are amazing!! so it up to you and what you think is best for you, do your reserch and talk to people who had rny and the band and ask them what they feel about their surgery a year or more after.
i would look for the DS aswell. when i had surgery i wasn`t very informed a bout this surgery but i think i woulda had the DS. if were better informed check that out it can be also a very good chooise. it doesn`t leave the blind stomach which i think is great.

but i love love love my rny and i would do it again in a heart bit!.
and any surgery will work with hard work and good after care.  you just have to make ur decition

good luck!

I don't know if you've looked into the sleeve, but it doesn't have the malabsorption issues of the RNY but studies are showing higher average weight loss than with the band.

All I know is that I love my RNY and plan on getting pregnant and my OB told me I am better off after surgery then before when I was overweight and was pregnant. Your body doesnt have to endure as much stress when your thin, and the babies born to women with the RNY are healthy same as overweight mothers, but the RNY patients have less recovery time.
just make sure your making the right decision for you because different kinds of surgery gives you more options to make sure you are doing the right thing for yourself. Be educated about your body because you are the only one that knows whats right for it... :) good luck

Hey Chick!  It sounds like the sleeve  (VSG) could be the  best of both worlds for you.  There is no re-routing or malabsorbtion (sp?) but you get great restriction.  I'm 25.....and was sleeved in March.  Go over to the VSG board and take a look around.  I'm glad you are doing something about it while you are young.   Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

I am reading a lot about RNY here, so I thought I would share my experience as someone with the Band. I really like it- probably the best thing that has happened to me. However you do have to work at losing weight. It isn't magic, it is just a GREAT tool to help you when you are ready to put in the effort. I have lost 48 lbs, slowly and steadily. I think you are suppose to lose any where from 1-5 lbs per week. In the beginning it is much easier to lose weight at a faster pace because we have more to lose. I also read in some reponses about needing RNY if you have too much weight to lose, and although I am not educated on that enough to agree or disagree, I started at 278 and 5'7. So with over 100 lbs to lose, I am still happy that I chose the band. It is very safe, and I personally felt uncomfortable with the severity of Bypass. But like everyone else is saying here, only you and your doctor can know what is best for you. If you decide to get the band I would love to talk to you about the hardships and the rewards!
